Went to the eye doctor yesterday and I have hit that point of needing bifocals. I'll get my new glasses next week. So, anything I need to be aware of in regards to bifocals and shooting?

Bear, they won’t really work for shooting, especially shooting prone. Get yourself a prescription that has the entire lens set to focus on the distance to the front sight (28 inches IIRC). You then might also want to have a bifocal at the bottom of the lens set to up close work. That’s what I use for shooting with Irons.

If you are short sighted get a pair of the supermarket reading glasses in your prescription. Failing that check out the "safety supply" companies. Most sell prescription safety glasses for peanuts.

I have to wear reading glasses; and then had to by inserts for my shooting safety glasses to focus on the front blade of the pistol sight. However I have bought DIY Safety glasses that have a variable lens; as opposed to a normal bifocal. These are really good. I always forget to take them to the range! But working or doing DIY they are great; because the depth of field is much better without any obvious change in focus.

The Mrs & I just got new glasses & we're trifocals no line. They take some getting used to & she picked a large lens frame & with her strong prescription grind she actually gets vertigo so badly they're changing for a smaller frame so the edge grind isn't so drastic.

I’ve pretty much tried everything, nothing beats a prescription lens set to focus on the front sight for the entire lens, corrected for any astigmatism you have. You can get away with a slightly longer focus distance if your shooting with an small diameter aperture sight as this improves the depth of field, that helps minimize how far out of focus the target appears. If your shooting in matches, you have to be able to read the target number, but aiming mark can, and will be, blurred. It’s pretty difficult to get your head tilted back far enough to look thru the lower part of a bifocal lens when shooting prone, I can’t do it.
I have them set the prescription for the non-shooting eye to focus at distance. And a bifocal insert at the bottom for up close on both lenses. Might cost you a bit, but they give you the best possible sight picture which is critical to accurate shooting. |

I used to be pretty damn good @ shootin...refused to use scopes...now I can't hit nowt!! Got a scope in basement I'm gonna fit to my 1916 sport. Methinks the eyes are failing faster than I can "tech-up"  But..misery loves company...so welcome to our world!

dittos what hoadie said but just because you cant see like you used to doesnt mean you cant still enjoy your shooting , try some cheap cheaters to figure things out , be aware they will continue to change and you may need to adjust over time ,

You might also try a rearsight with a variable aperture disc. Or making an add on diameter reducer with a small piece of metal with a small hole attached over the existing sight. The smaller apertures are a game changer.
