I got this rifle from a relative who said it was a Garand. It not a Garand, it is  Lee Enfield. I am not an expert by any means so I was hoping for some clarity here.

It has a crown with V.R. underneath, which I thought was for Victorie Rifles but I beleive it actually Victoria Regina (Queen Victoria)?

Under that it has L.S.A. Col. Does this mean Lieutenant-colonel (Canadian Army)?

Under that it has 1896 L.E. 1

It has pearls and rubies, (plastic?) embedded in stock. Was told this may be WWI trench art.

SN 4452?

I am thinking it is part of the original purchase by Canada in 1896 of 13k Lee Enfields from the Brits.

Your rifle was originally a Magazine Lee Enfield Mk I manufactured in 1896 by the London Small Arms Company during the reign of Queen Victoria. It is suggested that you include a full length photo since later changes are possible. This model of the Lee Enfield differed from its more common successor, the Mk I*, in having a clearing rod. The "pearls and rubies" were likely installed more recently by Bubba and would not have been applied by any soldier to whom the rifle was issued!

Thanks

I figured out the V.R. as it just came to me. I had seem it before.
The makers mark I discovered amd in an article it said their quality was better than the other other factories involved in the prouction of the Lee Enfields.
The "Bubba" comment made me laugh and honestly I was thrown off by the feminin nature of the rubies and pearls.

I will attach full length pics when i get chance.

I did get this gun as a hunting rifle but if it is part of the first allotment Canada bought in 1896 I will have it checked for shootability and if safe use it only at the range.

This is how a Magazine Lee Enfield Mk I would have originally appeared. Note the clearing rod protruding from the bayonet lug. .

Thanks for your replies. Here are a couple pics of what I have. It is 49.5 inches long. I am confused because it looks very different.

It's been "sporterised". Wood cut down & modified & hand-guard removed to look more like a commercial hunting rifle.

I was worried that it was. I think the bolt nay be different too. It has no markings at all. Since it is sporterized I may now clean it up for hunting instead of just using it at the range.

Before using this rifle for hunting, I suggest that you have the barrel checked. Many of these rifles have had their bores shot out.
