It was a nice day in Blue Ridge, got in a little practice time up at the cabin shooting the CNo.7.

The C No.7 is a Long Branch 1946 single shot, basically a No.4 rifle with a modified bolt and solid .22 barrel of the same outer contour of the .303 barrel.   Perfect for practicing the prone slow fire and standing slow fire stages of the CMP Vintage Military Rifle matches.  This will help me keep up my shooting skills and save on my limited .303 reloading components.

I printed out a SR Target reduced for 50 feet off the web.  The 10 ring is 3/8 inches in diameter.  The X ring is just a dot.

The sight is pretty good, windage and elevation adjustable, but I need a smaller aperture to improve my focus.

Had to shoot the 10 rounds across multiple targets, otherwise, I’d shoot out the edges of the 10 ring and not be able to score the target.  Shot a 97-4x prone.  91-1x and 94-3x standing.

I’m going to use this rifle to work on my standing scores, got to get these in the mid to high 90’s routinely.

britrifles.
I cannot print the target you show but I copied it from your pictures and using the information on the top of the target. Will this suffice when I try my .22? The 10 ring is 3/8"...

Try this:

But if you can’t print them out, I’ll measure the score ring diameters and post them.  7 ring should measure 1.89 inches. Same scoring rules apply, bullet touching ring counts to that rings value.

The SR target has score rings out to 5, not sure why this version goes out to 7 only.

I calculated the diameter of the score rings for a SR Target scaled to 50 feet with .224 dia. Bullets (diameters in inches):

 X   0.052
10  0.385
 9   0.885
 8   1.385
 7   1.885
 6   2.385
 5   2.885

Except that I do not have any means to print.
My targets I made have the 7 ring 1/2" smaller in diameter than the 2.94" the website has given the 7 ring.

I did my own calculation of the ring sizes, they appear to match the diameters when I print the 50 foot range target out  on the website.

The photo you show is for a 25 yard range target, so these will have larger score rings.

50 feet is equivalent to just over 16.6 yards.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

A bit of practice today with the C No. 7, this time at 25 yards with the SR Target reduced for that range.  It did a bit better, perhaps the bullet is more stable at 25 yds vs 50 feet where I first tried it.

Score was 100-2x, shot prone unsupported with the original sights.  Just got the edge of the 10 ring on that shot at 3:00.

25yds looks good - what are you saying of 50 feet , did it do worse ?
try it at 50yds with adjusted targets , mine is great at that range , far better than this old man anymore ,

ASquare, if you look back a few posts on this thread, I have a pic of a target shot prone at 50 feet.  Score was 97.  At 25 yards, i shot a better score; 100 (all in the 10 ring).  The targets are proportional to the range and reduced from the SR 200 yard target.  So all things being equal, I’d expect the same score at 50 feet and 25 yards.

that was what i interpreted but wanted it clarified , i would have expected that as well , what do you attribute this to ? was thinking the sights ? im thinking the peep sees larger at the closer range and harder to focus ? yet with equally adjusted target size i was not so sure that to be true ,

The theory is that bullets take some distance to stabilize after they leave the muzzle, they initially corkscrew along the bullet flight path due to some amount of yaw in the axis of rotation.  I know this to be true of .30 caliber like the .303 in some rifles.  I’ve experienced this myself comparing 100, 200 and 300 yard groups.  A 200 yard group size in minutes of angle will be slightly smaller than a 100 yard group.  This was proven many year ago by shooting through screens spaced at 100, 200, 300 yards and plotting each hit. Individual bullet holes will change position within the group as the range increases.  I’m not sure how much of this translates to .22 LR, but it may be similar.  Much of this is determined by how centered the bullet is in the bore as it enters the rifling.

I could definitely benefit from a smaller aperture.  The CNo.7 rear sight has a rather large aperture for aging eyes like mine.  A smaller aperture helps increase the depth of focus and also reduces aiming errors.

thats what i was thinking as well on the apertures , i know at closer ranges i have way too large a field of view with mine , its not adjustable on mine ,
the peeps on the flip sight for the no4 had two options for range , a PH sight maybe ?

i get the stabilization , minimum 14" barrel length with correct twist for 22s , and i realized the 50 foot was pretty close target , those that shoot 22s seriously here like to practice at 37yds , might have a lot of reasons for that range but it seems to be a consistent request , used to have moveable target stands we could adjust to that , now they are fixed at 25 & 50 so i get a lot of complaints ,
