On another note... I do have a pristine No4 Mk1 reciever and barrel. Lee Speeds are basically Sporters, albeit high end. Could you make the furniture for this hardware in an exotic wood? If possible, could you post some of your works on other rifles/shotguns? It might be cool to build a No4 with a P-H aperture sight and a five round magazine with hand crafted furniture in exotic wood! My curiousity is piqued... thanks!

No its because only stupid rich people with no clue spend like that, you know the kind, to them a couple grand is like 10 bucks to the rest of us.

As I mentioned, I had no idea a custom stock was that much. There are many examples of excellent Sporters on this forum. I guess my walnut Bishop Sporter stock will remain my "exotic" wood rifle! No4 hardware in good shooting condition can usually be picked up for $150-$200 in my neck of the woods. Finding an after market Sporter wood stock is getting tough, and many people around here use products like ATI. I'm not aware of any company producing walnut Sporter stocks... pity...

You should take a No1Mk111, No1Mk111*,No4Mk1,No4Mk2,and a  No5Mk1 furniture set and make a batch of reproduction sets using Beech and or Walnut, nothing fancy. Also using an ATI composite set, run a batch using the same wood as mentioned above. There is a definite market for full wood and sporter furniture for the Lee Enfield and if you have the skill set you mentioned and are willing to make some added income, this would pan out for you exponentially...

I have thought about trying my hand at stock making. What tools would I need if I were to get serious about it?

Goosic. I had the same thought. He could use the ATI as a template. Jsincopey, I'll bet there would be a bigger market for these wood Sporter Enfield stocks than for Mausers!

tools are
Not expensive .. lol I use a rasp ... a band saw .. chisel... lamp for smoking and fitting metal into wood .. some sand paper .. cheering tools ... and a whole pile of knowledge through trail and error lol .. I have a duplicator but that was not needed I do all my stuff by hand now.. just turns out better.. there is no such thing as a duplicator that produces a finished stock that actually fits... most on this machine turn out smaller than pattern .. waste of time and money . Better to hand fit the whole thing ..

In my opinion, for a Lee Speed, any nicely grained wood suffices. It's in the detail (checkering, fit, elegant lines) that set these Sporters apart from regular hunting firearms at the time. Of course, being used in Africa and India might make a native wood from either of these countries appropriate!

They all look good! Pick one and go with it.

That's a really nice piece of wood. How long would a project like this take?

I would love to have my LB done with Arizona Ironwood (Mesquite). I even have the wood from a section off of the Ironwood tree in the ex wife's backyard.  The rifle would look fantastic...

Goosic. Would that wood be heavier than what's currently on your rifle?

It would have to be suitably strong AND suitably hard as well. Plus it would need to be cut correctly originally.
I've always wondered about fiddle-back maple for one

The current wood on the rifle is walnut. Arizona Ironwood is a little denser and a little heavier. Smells wonderful in a camp fire...

If I were to supply you with the Ironwood, what is your labor price to produce a stock set such as the one I provided in the earlier photo and what would be the turn around time involved???

OK - i held off till now , but dang guys you got some great looking lumber there , i would be proud to fit any of my 'special' rifles with those , but then i just gotta find that "special rifle" in order to need a piece of that timber

when it comes to value of a gun? That gun is worth whats it’s worth to you!!!! If your dream gun is a cooey with exhibition grade wood? than do it! I don’t think myself there is any gun that isn’t worthy of it ... life is short have your sprinkles on your favorite ice cream.. my turn around time is my standard answer.. it takes me as long as it takes me.. of course I’d like to say it takes a few weeks but every project is unique and I approach them as so.. I am a fussy artist as well a craftsman..

Let me rephrase the question.
I have a rifle. That rifle is a 1942 Lee Enfield No4Mk1*(shown in earlier photo.)I also have a block of Arizona Ironwood.  I am looking for someone that has the talent to turn the wood into usable furniture for the above said 1942 Lee Enfield No4Mk1* rifle. If you sir,are capable of such craftsmanship and are supplied the necessary lumber to create the aforementioned stock set. What would be your total End User pricing be??

.. when someone supplies a blank I can’t guarantee the stock as far as natural voids that may occur in the wood .. something like this is roughly 1600$

There is a gent who goes by the handle of Von Gruff. He is an accomplished knife maker who also creates sporting rifles in the Lee Speed style.

He documented his progress making a Lee Speed clone, he took pics. This might give you an idea of the work and hours involved.
