I have seen some posts about using 308 ammo. I do not want to use that, so any suggestions for best surplus or new ammo would be very appreciated. Thanks all

Howdy from Phoenix Arizona. Surplus military ammunition for might be a little difficult to purchase for the time being. Aguila ammunition offer 7.62x51mm 150grn FMJBT cartridges that are well below 308 pressure ratings. If you reload I have a perfect load for the 308 Win that never exceed 35,000 C.U.P. Midwayusa offers Winchester 7.62x51mm NATO ammunition as well. Currently they only have them by the 240 rd cases.
