I have a enfield no4 mk1/3 ftr and am curious as to who manufactured it. I am also curious any other markings that would tell me any info on it thanks.

The thing to remember about the No 4 Mk 1/3's is that they started life as a No 4 Mk 1*. So, that automatically means it was made by Savage or Long Branch. Now, the serial number tells the rest. The "L" letter in the serial means it was made by Long Branch in Canada. Savage used a "C" letter. Others can help you narrow down the year by the serial number, that is beyond my knowledge. This rifle was Factory Thorough Repaired in 1956 by the Fazakerley factory. It was converted to a Mk 1/3 meaning the receiver was modified so that the trigger was hung from the receiver rather than the trigger guard. It produces a smoother trigger. That's about the extent of what I can tell you.

I have a 69Lxxxx Mk 1/3 which was manufactured in 1944. Your 63L would also have been produced in 1944. There should be impression stamping on the left side of the receiver similar to: No4 Mk I* Long Branch 1944 The barrel is most likely a Fazakerley 5 groove installed at the time of the Mk 2 upgrade. It may not have seen much use, at if it’s been properly cleaned, it should be a good shooter. The bolt may show two serial numbers, the SN of the rifle it was originally fitted to, and the current 63L number either stamped or electro pencil over the old number. Look at the back of the bolt handle. The FTR and Mk 2 upgrades did not typically keep parts sorted by SN. The wood forend is a replacement for the Mk 2 action, not the original (does not have the wood insert at the rear transverse screw). It looks like it has the Mk 1 machined rear sight, 1 MOA click elevation adjustment. You have a nice No. 4 Mk 1/3 there. |

| I have no markings that state long branch that I can find anywhere. I have taken it apart and cleaned all the packing grease and it is an immaculate shooter. The rear sight is milled as well and I got it on such a cheap deal I couldn't say no! |

Your serial number is 63L4069. The L is indicative of a rifle made at the Long Branch facility in Canada. Your rifle started life as a No4MkI* in early to mid 1944. It went through a FTR (Factory Thorough Repair) in 1956 at the Fazackerly Plant where it was upgraded to the No4Mk1/3. I have a Mk1/3 Savage that went thru the same process in 1952 I cannot seem to stop it rotating when I post it. I have even saved it 'upside down' and it then posts upside down !!!!!!1  |

It may be the "exif" file, a hidden & attached, text file containing all sorts of information about the image, but stripped away when you re save it. [Image]

i had the same problem posting photos when I first joined here. Seems the upside down thing was pervasive in my attempts to get any of them online here. Then I began to be really really careful to orient the camera correctly top to bottom (I use an iPhone or iPad mostly) and the problem cleared up. This worked well for my “devices”. When I am posting the occasional photo taken from my DSLR, the website accepts these and never has a upside-down problem. ------------- |
