In 2005,I bought this rifle as a present, for my brother, for Christmas,in full MILSURP. After he "sporterized" it,he decided to never hunt, again,so I traded him my 1942 Femaru .380 pistol, and a friend brought it to me,from Michigan. Fortunately,he never cut the barrel, just the butt stock, and fore arm,and he kept all the hardware. So,I'll restore it. I am curious,as it seems to be a '48 Fazerkely ,used by the South African Defense Force. The bore slugged at .310 ,and all numbers seem to match. What I'm curious about,is the front sight marking,as I was told it would have a 3-digit height number. Any ideas?

if your talking about the front sight blade height, I think I’ve seen “.03” and .”.030”, so not necessarily three digits. I’ll have to check my spares to confirm this.
Is .310 the measured groove diameter? That’s fairly tight for a .303 barrel, more typically .313 to .315. Typical bore was .302 to .303.

Yes,according to a gunsmith,.310 is the groove diameter. I tried to post pics, but keep getting :error" message. The frint site has an "F"on the top left side(looking down at it),and "06",on the right side. On the flat of the barrel,it has a stamping of a rifle, and sword crossed, with "S" on the left"A",on the right, and a "U"with chicken track, above. On the receiver top,it has a "O"with a chicken track, inside. I plan on finding another butt, and forestock, and the ring that retains the top wood,at the receiver. I have everything else. On the bolt head is a zero. It shoots great.

Left side,of receiver is electro-etched"48PF(in a 3 sided box),23956 the same numbers(23956)is on the right side of the barrel, and the rear of the bolt handle.

I have to chuckle a little but no offense is intended. It's your description of the "chicken track". That is actually a "broad arrow". The "U" with the broad arrow inside is the South African ownership mark.

Well, ..that confirms my hunch about it being an SA rifle ,then. It really is in good condition,so I'll plan on restoring it to milsurp. Thanks for the input .

It depends on the deviation from 00. Some are 3 digits, but others are 2 only. 0-.060" is marked -06 & +0.030" is marked 03 for example. The third ".05" digit is used for ones like the 0.015 sights.

Out of curiosity, I used a lead "oo " buckshot ,and slugged the barrel.( .333") Low spots(lands ?) were .3032. High spots(grooves?) were .3105
