I recently purchased a SMLE rifle and am having some trouble finding information about some of the markings on the rifle. Under the bolt it is marked Enfield 1914 SMLE III. What I can't find information about is the barrel markings. On the barrel is Vickers Adjusted, Martin, and Nitro Proved. What do these mean? Any information is much appreciated.

The martin name refers to alex martin gunsmiths in scotland who "regulated" a fair few lee enfields for target shooting , active up to 1960.

someone on the forum will know more , be patient..

The Martin Adjusted Rifles are those that were Built by the Alexander Martin Company from best No 3 parts taken from the production line to produce Competition Rifles during the Inter-War years.  As this rifle is also stamped VICKERS I would assume that the barrel is an original Vickers Barrel, but the overall setup is part of the Martin Adjusted Rifle.  Part of the Martin Adjustment is to cork bed the barrel, which usually doesn't last the 80+years since originally done.
