Gentleman,

This past weekend I took the plunge and bought my first No. 5. She is marked as noted, with the "(F)", and dated 2/47 , followed by a "Z 46xx".

As I had company yesterday, my range time would be limited, and after firing but 10 shots, was further limited by the afternoon rains that we see so often in Central Florida.

Using 1983 MEN, it fired within 2" of the point of aim at backstop target, some 50 yds. hither.

My question is, what were the Brits thinking to put the rear sling bar to the right side of the butt? Seems a bit awkward to sling up this way.

Majority of riflemen shoot with their right hand. Your cheek would inherently make contact with that sling attachment, fouling the shot and your face...

Thanks for chiming in.. While that is a possibility, it certainly carries a bit funny. And if that is indeed the case, why then was this not incorporated on the No. 4s produced later? Perhaps I am reading too much into it.

None-the-less, the recoil, whilst stout, was not as bad as had been rumored.

The British didn't shoot slung in battle. The sling was just a "carry strap" to them.

The recoil being,"harsher" than the No4 had alot to do with the smaller rubber buttpad. Less surface area to take up the resulting, "kick."

Thanx Hoadie, but its nothing especially great. I made a large quantity of 8 1/2 x 11 one inch square grid sheets on the copier. For me, I am happy just to get them to hit the paper, and ecstatic when the shots group reasonably close.

My land borders a state park for about 2500' and from sundown to sunrise we get a fair share of hogs coming thru. They are like a disk tiller on LSD. Am anxious to schedule time for a night in the treestand with the No. 5. A report will follow.

..wild boar has now invaded the 'burbs of Toronto (Pickering)
Nobody seems to know how they got here..but the claim 17 different boars in this pack.

This aughta be interesting going forward
Given our govt's & Ministry of Nat Resources history of mucking things up...we'll be hunting wild boar in downtown Toronto soon!!

The history of the wild pigs in America supposedly starts with Hernando DeSoto landing in Tampa Bay, a little shy of 500 years before Tom Brady.  As I recall, he landed with 1200 Spanish marines and some 400 hogs. Hogs have trouble keeping up with marching cadence, I guess. The pigs soon parted company with DeSoto's gang, and from what I remember only a handful of the marines survived the 3 year ordeal. DeSoto was not one of the lucky ones. Anyway, Florida was not a popular spot in those pre-A/C days and settlers did not start to trickle in until the mid-1800s. So basically the hogs had no enemies for 300+ years. Hence we are rather "blessed" with them.

I do think a hog hit with a .303 in the sticking spot should find himself seriously dead. I have used .308, .30-06 and .30-30 with great success in my recent past.

wait...wouldn't the Seminoles hunt them - back in the days of yore?

A wild hog , when hit by .303 will die of natural causes.

(Cuz if'n it's shot with .303, naturally it will die! )

I have a relative who took my dad's PH Supreme No4 on a safari using my dad's last box of 20 original Norma 215grn .303B bullets. The relative shot a Cape Buffalo 🐃.  My dad got his bullets back minus one round. During the hunt, he noticed that the guides all carried some form of Enfield rifle. Be it a No1 or No4...

I agree they would die quite nicely. Most shots I have taken at hogs were from 75 to 125 yards out. All of my previous rifles were scoped...generally with 2 1/2 to 3 power,.but now traded away for other toys. I do have a Win M94 Trapper. So I am looking forward to going scopeless.

The Seminoles evolved from the Muskogees and Creeks, about 200 years after DeSoto. They were always a Heinz 57ish group, even accepting runaway slaves into the fold. Technically, they are still at war with the US.

A well placed head shot with a 180grn sp should take the head right off the vermin. Wink
