Hi Guys, I work in a Military Museum and we have a No. 1 Mk III* with this scope mounted.  I have been unable to find any images or anything on the net that confirms or denies that this is a military type scope mount.  Hopefully someone here can help me.

It does look like original sniping equipment...

I did not find any identical scope and fittings in either Skennerton's "Lee Enfield" or Steve Houghton's
"The British Sniper".
I expect the scope would have the maker's mark on it somewhere. Can you identify the maker?

Also note that your rifle is fitted with the wrong magazine for the type. You have a No4Mk1 rifle magazine.

I don't have it with me at the moment, I know the scope is made in Germany.  I will find the right magazine in our spares, but that is the one it arrived with.  I also looked through Skennertons book but didn't find anything to match, hence my posting it here Wink

That scope is definitely German with that turret & lock knob.
Are there any markings on it?
(I'm thinking a Hensoldt of some kind)?

You have to remember the poms used captured German scopes at the start of the war as they didn’t have none of their own. they used German tech to make up the ww1 scopes .

Looks like a typical german 2 3/4 power tube that has had it's mounting bastardized and mated to that SMLE. Definitely not period and definitely not sturdy. This is just a fraudster attempt or someone wasting original geramn optics for a lark. This is a very crude adaption. If reciever has been dovetailed for base I'd be leary of safety issues arising for that much metal removed at that point.

It was done on the Mauser rifles with great success.
This mount looks like a typical German mount with a Oigee Berlin or Luxor type scope.
Period correct for WWI, but not WWII and I`d say not British, but who knows for sure without provenance.

The front base mount has been modified from the original german claw. The rear "dog leg" is modified and crudely so to mate to it's present host. This rear leg is the very weak not durable link here. It's not military grade by any means. To do the mods to this scope and rings the scope would have had to be completely disassembled  - rings are soldered in pace on tube. It's obvious this was done and the finish has suffered accordingly .  The rear ring/dogleg also appears askew and bent from recoil with this ad hoc arrangement. Likely no able to zero this properly as the original ability to 'windage' was eliminated when rear dogleg was modified.
I doubt this is period as finishes of rile and such are all over the place and not consistent with having been together since the great war. I'd wager this may even be a movie prop type setup.

A couple of photos of the scope markings, really cannot read them from the photos.  They say "Voightlander & Sonn, Braunschweig, Skoparette, No. 19428"

Very interesting, sgtlynn, thanks for sharing this Great looking Enfield & Scope. If I ever in Victoria, I'll try to visit the museum.
