he!!o Lee Enfield enthusiasts! I'm new to this milsurp and have never seen this type of butt stock in all the images I've seen of the No.4 Mk1. You can see there's a line that's been carved into the butt stock on both sides to give it some shape that is quite different than any other Lee Enfield I've seen. Could anyone please help me identify what model this butt stock belongs to? Or could this possibly be a custom job?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Deadeye88 - welcome to milsurps. Be careful - milsurps can be addictive. I haven't seen a stock like this before either, so will defer to the experts. There are a lot of aftermarket stocks available, or maybe a custom job as you summarized. However, it looks very authentic and appears to match the rest of the rifle.

I wouldn’t call it custom. It was done by some previous owner in my opinion. Have seen a few carved up something like this in the past.

looks like someone went to a great deal of effort to match it to the rifle but i think its a one off made by a civilian user ,

Thanks for the welcome and the replies. Yeah, that's what I was thinking too, that it was a one-off performed by either the owner or wood-worker. I'm actually looking to purchase this from a shop and was just wondering about the model.

well it looks a nice no4 mkI....mkI*....or mkI/2 ,I/3 or mk2 to me but id have to see the markings on the left receiver & wrist to know which it is exactly and who made it , if its a decent shooter id buy it , as a collector id pass unless i had the proper buttstock for it ,
would be happy to help as will others when that time comes ,

Pic is a bit fuzzy, but looks to still have the cross tie at the rear of the forend, so a No. 4 Mk I or Mk I*. Very nice looking rifle.

Thank you, yes it was listed as a No.4 Mk I. I went ahead and purchased it, thank you everyone for the help. Now on to the task of finding ammunition, which may be a while.

I saw some HXP greek surplus on GB. It's considered high quality and very good to shoot. 96 rounds @$1.30/round which is ridiculous, unless you compare it to everything else! Trying times we live in.

It looks like a user mod to me. It's real function nowadays is to drive the selling price down as its not "original" (nudge, nudge: wink, wink) maybe by the prices of an unmodified one? All you need is the wood, you already have the furniture!

Good guess as I’m not too far from Elwood Epps, but no, I bought it from Prophet River in Alberta.

Looks like it was well done, and you can always pick up a butt stock to bring it back to original!

I like it, very tasteful example of sporting yet preserving its originality. If it were mine it`d stay that way.

If it were mine I would find an original butt stack, fit it. fire it a few times and put the current one back. That way you would have the best of both worlds.
Good luck.

You never disclosed where you are in Canuckistan. Yet I suspected Ellwood's. (& you say your near there). Doesn't it tweak your curiosity?) Just askin..
BTW: Epps had a cartridge all his own - named after him.

@Stanforth: that’s an interesting idea. Though I may have some trouble trying to get the wood/colour/finish to match the forestock but it’d be a neat project for sure.
@Hoadie: Haha I’d say that’s a dang good shot in the dark considering all the possibilities in Canada! Well, not much but still quite a bit. Good to meet a fellow Canadian here.
So I found out the owner was the one who had the stock modified, so it is a one off job. He passed away and his child who inherited the rifle didn’t want to keep it so it got put up on consignment. I’ll take care of it and ensure it continues to be enjoyed for years to come. Thanks everyone for your input, I ended up ordering the rifle and it should be in my hands by the end of the week. I’ll post more pics if you’re interested.
