As stated in my other post I have parts on the way from Prestigious, Numrich and a couple UK vendors.

Upper hand guard arrived and has been fitted, nose cap and spring clip attached and is currently drinking lots of linseed oil, it`ll take a lot to get it to the same state as the rest of the rifle.

Next to arrive will be a nose cap and forward guard band from Numrich. The replacement nose cap will have the bayonet boss, lug and swivel mount removed, as this being a target rifle build there`s no need for such accoutrements.

Seems like a lot of work just to mount a target sight....LOL,  I`m retired with nothing better to do.

I will post pics as this progresses.

Cool. Have any pics of what you are starting with?

I got top wood for my Savage No4 Mk1* on ebay, both of them nice actually. My forearm came from Liberty Tree Collectors. NOS and really nice. Just needs some oil rubbed in.

I started with my 1915 enfield lock  NoI MkIII (no star) was rebarreled in 1937, has sold out of service marks but no ftr. this rifle still had its volley`s and cut off. Peep sight was my best bet to get some use out of it, I like shooting my guns and the WWWI battle sights on these are not conducive to my eyes, peeps are much better, scopes best. So when finished will resemble a NoI MkV 1920`s trials rifle.
Should also note this rifle has Non scrubbed New Zealand ownership marks along with a second serial number, the rifle is all matching. Like NZ got the rifle then put there own serial number
on it without striking out the original?

Wow! That's pretty nice as it is. I can fully understand about the sights though. My old eyes shoot much better looking through peeps.

I`m using a reproduction No1 MkV trials rifle upper hand guard to clean up the peep sights line of sight. It is a one piece as opposed to the 2 piece SMLE hand guards.

thats rather interesting , the mkIII has a rear sight that interferes with the mkV handguard as it was receiver mounted , what are you doing about that ? are you using a target rear sight ?
there were a lot of developments happening in the mkIII*- mkV- no4 transition i would never assume that would be compatible , but then ive never really tried it so ...........good luck ,

Here, let me clear this up for you

1. I`m mounting a target peep sight to my No1 mk3. ( Central Bisley Model )

2. I don`t like seeing the rear sight while looking through the peep sight.

3. I`m eliminating the no1 mk3 rear sight. (the rear sights, sight protectors have been removed)

4. Replacing the No1 mk3 hand guard(s) with a No1 Mk5 trials hand guard.

For those who may be interested the trials 1 piece upper hand guard fits on a No1 mk3, WWWI rifles, dont know about WWWII made rifles as I don`t own one. It(the hand guard) still uses the rear spring clip and a second band at the rear of the nose cap where the stacking swivel goes.

I like the idea.
I wonder if that's what those scarce Match modded No1's were at Bisley?
I always assumed it was some custom rig, but maybe it was that simple!

The mounting screws for the central sight arrived today. Here`s a picture, still waiting for the additional band and nose cap, but this shows basically what it`ll look like.

I like it.
if you're gong to have a spare nose cap why not go the whole hog & put a target front site (globe) on it too?

I like that idea, have been looking, havn`t seen any that work with the No1 sight block so far.

I`ll shoot it as is first and see how I do with the front blade sight.

I have rear aperture and front globe sight on one of my old .22 target rifles, and I do very well with it.

A Parker Hale Model 2 tunnel foresight be the one, it works with the front sight block, scarce as hens teeth, I`ve found an couple, but no inserts, and pricey beyond my budget.

Does it have the angled sight block dove tail?
This was my issue.
Also is the "tube" slim enough to fit between the nosecap "ears"?

Shamu,
I dont know the answer to those questions. I originally saw it on Rifleman.org.uk, when I went web searching for such a devise, then one for sale in the UK for big bucks with no inserts.
Described as Parker Hale or AJ parker for smle rifles, so I assume they would mount in the smle`s front sight dove tail grove and fit between the ears....
I`m in no hurry to acquire one, unless one falls in my lap. As stated above I`ll use it with the front battle sight for now and go from there, wont know `till I get her done and to the range.

Hopefully the rest of the parts arrive this week, customs seems to slow incoming mail horribly.

A couple of (hopefully) helpful suggestions.
Very carefully check the O.D of the tube (it has to fit in between the "ears" of a nosecap.)
Double check the size of inserts, there are several.
The SMLE front sight mount block's dovetail is angled, make sure what you're getting is too.
I wanted to go there but so far haven't found one that works!
I'm thinking at this point that it's going to have to be a custom made sight block & slim globe sight tube?
It HAS been done though!

Would a Lyman 17a globe sight work?

Dovetail angle and size is different. The No1  dovetail grove is roughly 7/32" the 17a, 3/8"

It would have to be fitted, for me that would mean gun smith at $80/hr plus the initial cost of the unit..... not in the budget.

The Canadian Army at one time did make up some Lyman 17 fore sights by soldering sight inserts onto the globes. These were for the No4 rifles, which of course are different again from the No1`s.

Again, not worried about putting a front globe sight on this rifle, at least not right away.

I asked as I purchased one for a No4 I have with a P-H rear sight.

JoeSalter.ca has some of the Army retro fit Lyman 17 front sights complete with the inserts and tins, they are for the No4 rifle $70

That's where I got mine. I haven't installed it yet. Winter project. I'm not entirely convinced it will work with the Parker Hale rear aperture sight eye piece I've got.

I'm curious why not?
The PH rears have a lot of elevation available.
You're going to (probably) re cut the front dovetail anyway to align it parallel to the bore.
Look at how low the tube sits to the wood in the pic above.

It's de-elevation that concerns me. With the German eye piece I have on the Parker-Hale, and with it at its lowest setting before it interferes with the cycling of the bolt, I'm still way high @ 100 yards.

I hadn't considered that! good point.

Replacement aperture arrived from England today, 6 hole base, filter/lens holder(blue filter only), and eye piece bell, and the original box. Pricey.

The nose cap and barrel I ordered from Numrich has been in Canadian customs since Sept 29th, no telling when it will be released. The UK pkg went through in less than 24hrs, no rhyme or reason.

Looks like it will be a while before I can finish this.

I'm curious.
Whats the O.D. of that setup?
I ask because the German one I got fouls the bolt handle when zeroed.

Shamu,
The max OD of the eye piece is .75", I might have to raise the front sight as well, but I`m going to zero this rifle to 300yrds first and see if it`s needed or not.
300yrds seem to be the go to range for these old battle rifles, then learn and use hold over/under for shorter ranges.
Hopefully the other parts will be here before I`m snowed in.....LOL

I think you'll be OK the ones I'm having a fouling problem with are almost an inch thick & 0.95 ish diameter!
