Follow up, regarding sight blackening.The original "carbide candles" are still available, as is the "lamp grade (pea) carbide, but its a bit spendy.

More impressive, and "Enfield Forum" correct, would be a trench-lighter made from a 303 cartridge case.

Various versions but this is mine with a sliding wind shield and cap to go over the wick to stop the petrol evaporating.

Various versions of that are available too, but they use "petrol" (naptha based).

This one is smokier for carbon black & kerosene (paraffin) doesn't evaporate like Petrol/naptha. Thats why the caption said "KERO"
