You really should try to give us a "full" pic of your rifle. It would help us greatly.

Its a sporterised SMLE, AKA Rifle No 1 Mk III* & I think the barrel is cut, making a return to "as was" condition a hard row to hoe. It was completely overhauled to 80% of "like New" condition at some point (FTR stamp) It
was originally a military arm (the "royal Cypher) crown, but was sold
into the civilian market later (The "BNP", Birmingham Nitro Proof, not "DNP", that's a bad
stamping) was a requirement for rifles sold into the civilian market in the U.K.
In original condition it would have looked like this (except for the fancy rear "Target" sight, which is a later civvvy add-on..

Definitely look’s like it’s been shortened as mentioned above, looks like the inner barrel band was removed too can’t make it out (see it etc) meaning if so the barrel is free floated to the fore stock & held in place by the (King Screw=big front screw on the trigger guard assembly.) The original barrel looks to have been replaced with a standard 1940 (broad arrow 40) in the photo during the FTR process. A nice truck sporter carbine now Cheer’s.

Wow, thanks for the information, I bought this rifle over 40 years ago from a friend. Does anybody have an idea about the value? Is it worth anything?

The star in an oval stamped on the Knox form indicates rust or damage in the barrel.

Thanks for that info. I actually shot this rifle plenty of times, but then stored it for a couple years and when I went to the range, I was having some issues with the she!! getting jammed, I sent it over to the gunsmith to find out why and he told me there was a lot of rust buildup and had to clean it up so I’m assuming he may have put a stamp there

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see the star in a circle? There's something in the Knox, but it could be a Property mark or a sold out of service mark. Can you get a clear shot of it?

No, that stamp was placed there at an Army Ordnance Depot while the rifle was still in service a very long time ago.

Shamu, look closely at the third picture the OP posted. | That is a D inside a circle and it is typically used to identify a Draw Lapped barrel...

I'm honestly seeing half a circle with mush inside it. We need a clear shot of that mark.

Definitely a " D", Draw Lapped, not rust. The problem with the star indicating rust in chamber or bore is 2 fold.
Firstly its similar to the struck out Broad arrow, Indicating sold out of service, which is 2 Broad arrows facing each other like this -><- (best I can do with keyboard graphics, but you get the idea) but larger than this * star.
Secondly it may indicate it once did have rust, but its also possible the rusted part was replaced but the mark not erased!

Yup! Definitely a D, apologies to the OP for any concern I might have raised. Coincidentally, last week one of the young RO's at my range who also shares an interest with Lee Enfields proudly showed me his just purchased No.1 MkIII and exclaimed what a good deal he got on it considering it had the * stamp on the knox form showing that it had the longer bolt lug installed (bless his heart!).

No worries it’s all good, didn’t realize all those markings meant something. It’s a great rifle I love shooting it. Rich

" the * stamp on the knox form showing that it had the longer bolt lug installed (bless his heart!)."
Ask him if had been just "Nitro Proofed", NP or " BRITISH Nitro Proofed", BNP at the higher pressure rating for MkVII ammo.

Golden State Arms Santa Fe Division out of Pasadena California was notorious for Sporterizing alot of various military rifles back in the 1960’s FFRICH307 and you are the current owner of one of those. They are not worth a whole lot but still fit nicely into any collection of sporterized military rifles. They make for excellent "Brush Guns" here in Arizona as well. Use it, keep it cleaned and oiled and that rifle will outlast you...
