Has anyone chronographed the shorty No5Mk1 in comparison to the longer barrel of a No4Mk1? And what were the results?

I took a look thru Skennertons book and thru Reynolds book. I couldn’t find muzzle velocity results from the No. 5 which seems a bit odd, perhaps I missed it. One would think this would be a factor in deciding the barrel length, although for a Carbine for jungle use, the Mk 7 cartridge would still retain more than adequate velocity for intended ranges. The No. 5 barrel is about 7 inches shorter than the No. 4, so I would guess a muzzle velocity in the vicinity of 2320 fps for the Mk 7 cartridge. Perhaps one of our members has chrono’ed Mk 7 ammunition thru their No. 5 rifle. |

About 200FPS shy of the full length, Instrumental at 10' with my handholds. (174 Gr Hornady IMR 3031) Not sure with MilSurp Cordite loads though. ------------- Don't shoot till you see the whites of their thighs. (Unofficial motto of the Royal Air Force) |

he!!o. Latest chrono results, same ammo but 13 years later with a different No5. Different result...  Faster than before... No way to tell of course if this is because of the different No5 or if the ammo is hotter. In case the image was to disappear, new average velocity is 2332fps. Gil.
