Just got a Santa Fe Jungle Carbine from my father. He'd had it in the garage since the Cuban missile crisis, when he bought it because he thought we might be invaded by commies. He paid $17 for it, he says. It even had the original Sears box, although the cardboard was so eaten by silverfish we had to trash it.
The rifle is virtually unused. However, the front flash hider and the rear sight have to be installed. So, questions: 1. How is the front flash hider meant to be installed? Do I need to get the barrel threaded? Or is it soldered, or welded, or press fit, or what? The flash hider does not have any set screws in it. 2. The rear sight is missing. There is a gap milled out of the charger bridge where the sight is supposed to go. There is a screw, and a kind of strange box-shaped spring. So, what goes in here? I suspect an Enfield sight can be modified to fit, but I'd like to know what Golden State originally had in mind for this. Anybody have one of these and feel like talking about their sights in detail? Many thanks. John www.sff.net/people/John.Moore |

I just sold/traded mine to white rhino. They used the stock sight that came with the original rifle. Find out whom manufactured it at which Enfield armory. If you would like to make it match the original Enfield Jungle carbine you need a 800 yard max rear sight.

Guess I should have looked more carefully before I posted questions. The flash hider does have a set screw -- it was hidden under the sight blade. And Springfield Sporters list a "Rear Sight, Santa Fe L-type." So I'm guessing that's it.
The gun is a No 1 Mk III made by BSA. with a Birmingham Nitro Proof mark. Springfield Sporters also list a "Rear Sight with Slide, Australian." for the #1MkIII. Since I've read that the Australian made a limited number of Jungle Carbines out of MKIIIs, I ordered it also. I don't know if that will fit the Santa Fe, but it was only a few dollars. I don't have a digital camera, but I'll try taking a picture of it with my cell phone and posting it this weekend. |
