With getting older and failing eyesight I decided to mount a scope onto one of my Lee Enfields, an Ishapore 2A. After doing a lot of research I decided on an Addley Precision No (some) Gunsmithing mount. (I'm willing to bet some of you will know what simple 'gunsmithing' I had to do to attach the scope mount.) The scope I mounted was an old-school Redfield 'Wideview' 1 3/4 X 5 which I've had kicking around my shop since forever and was installed as a tribute to my older brother (RIP) who swore by that scope when he got me started in hunting back in the '70's. As an aside: I have to laugh at all the 'cool kids' on the various AR15 websites that swear that LVPO's are the latest and greatest piece of gear to EVER COME ALONG! and I'm like son, they've been around since forever. Anyway, I digress. Mounted the scope, grabbed 3 types of ammo: Turkish ZQ M80 Ball, Israeli IMI M80 Ball, and Federal Premium Match. There were some interesting results on the 50 yard air conditioned indoor range which I shot at since the Heat Index in Texas was a sizzling 114f. (45.5 C. to our Fahrenheit impaired friends) that day. Both the IMI and Federal Match ammunition each threw one flyer which blew up what would've been 1/2" groups while the ZQ with no flyers shot into 13/16". I fully intend to start working op some handloads for the rifle with the SMK's and Berger Juggernauts I have on hand.  |

Is that Type 99 in the bottom the rack? Like you as I get old I am thing about scopes. The joys of betting older. I do enjoy a Enfield in 308 from India. All I shoot is German 308 I stole while in Germany. At 50 years it is great gun. ------------- Always looking for military manuals, Dodge M37 items,books on Berlin Germany, old atlases ( before 1946) , military maps of Scotland. English and Canadian gun parts. |

You have a good eye, yes, that is a Type 99 I picked up last year. It's not just eyesight, but I'm starting to struggle to shoot offhand or even from the prone position so I work up all handloads from a Caldwell 'Lead Sled' to take as much of 'me' out of the equation.

I just picked up a set of dies for the 7.7 Arisaka and plan to reload for it. Have you miked the bullets you load for it and if so, what do they mike out at? Reason I ask is that I bought a few hundred Hornady Interlock 150 gr. flat base soft point that mike out perfectly at .311" but unfortunately they gave sub-standard performance in the Lee Enfields I tried them in which is strange considering my LB loves the Hornady 150gr. SST bullets. I figure they'd be a prime candidate for the 99.

| i had a type 99 once upon a time with mono pod and aircraft sights , it was complete with mum intact and had not been duffle cut or messed about with , i dont miss it really but sometimes i reflect upon it |

| I have several Addley mounts. I like them, but a couple of years ago, I suggested to the owner, because of the problem with eye/scope alignment when mounting a scope on a LE, he should perhaps offer a package that includes a scope, mount, and a removable cheek piece. Lo and behold, he did! Not sure if he had already thought of this or not, but I never did hear anything from him. |

Very Nicely Done Sir! Being a dyed in the wool iron sights shooter for both target and hunt, I only recently succumbed to the necessity of scopes and red dots with my vision challenges. It is a good thing we get wiser and better looking along with the challenges of age … (That’s my story anyway, and I’m sticking to it  )------------- There is room for all of gods creatures ... right next to the mashed potatoes |

I feel for you, I do. I just got a SMLE fitted out with "Target Irons", but modern ones. Its not easy, or inexpensive, but it can be done. I fitted a Lithgow SMLE with an Aussie-made Central No4 sight, then I added a "Gehmann" eyepiece (dioptric eyesight correction & an Iris diaphragm) & can now shoot with "irons" again. Its actually amazing how using a scope of any kind isolates you from the shooting process. I had a .22RF case rupture yesterday. I saw it instantly as I was not staring through a scope, & so was able to check everything out.  ------------- Don't shoot till you see the whites of their thighs. ill never be shooting with irons again save my short range 22s , cowboy guns and such , life deals all of us the unfortunate with our eyes and ive just admitted im only shooting long range with a scope these days , facts are facts and much as i wish it different now my hands are dealing me a whole nuther set of problems , im having trouble with my favorite fishing poles as well , id always thought that would be my old age endevor , - i guess we just do all we can till we cant , im sad to say im beginning to get to cant more every year , but life is good - we keep trying , adapting and compromising to stay as able as we can

There are optical eyepieces for the SMLE & the No4. Some magnify & adjust, some only adjust for eyesight. Many have Iris diaphragms too. They're not truly "drop in" because they're kind of bulky, so things like taller front sights need to be matched. They can give you an unbelievable boost with tired old eyes. This is what it looks like in place. No need to replace front sight blades if your rifle has the original it came with and you can still operate the bolt handle up and down without striking the sight...
