Only seen a couple of these and both were with P1888 bayonets. Any ideas. One has buckle straps the other missing straps, maybe to hold shovel handle??

if that were a US item of that era it would be a picket pin scabbard for staking the horses tether - those got used as a bayonet scabbard in the collector market , but since its looking more brit than the ones we used ill wait to see what others think/know ,

Interesting, A friend and I were wondering if it was some sort of mounted kit.

Just got confirmation that this is indeed a US Calvary M1912 picket pin scabbard.

Mystery solved

yes - i thought it might be but i was not certain as it held an 1888 bayonet , id not seen that before , i had seen them with the krag bayonets , i never had either that scabbard or the picket pin in my US collection , but then i was concentrated on the rifles , then the bayonets then the scabbards , but i suspected it was not meant to hold the bayonet , .

im glad you got your answer and im thinking you have a nice piece of kit for ypour US collection if you have such , i sold off my US collection years ago , and ive gotten rusty on the items since then , your piece looks complete or nearly so tho , they attached to other kit so missing straps and such may well have been attached to other bits of kit , if i get time to research it i may be able to find what it was attached to and how - i still have a couple of my old resources here but id have to look through my refernce books to find anything ,

the US used this kit thru the first WW , that much i do remember , we still had mounted troops , my M1911 and its original issue holster was issued to a man i actually knew that it was issued to , he was cavalry , that was a long time ago and i was too dumb to ask enough questions back then when my father bought it , but his name is in the holster , so much i should have asked of back when i was a kid that i didnt know enough to ask ,
