I picked up a John Inglis BHP for a very low price because someone had tried to expunge the serial number.  I assume it was stolen.  I checked with the ATF and was told as long as the serial number was still legible there was no problem with my purchasing it.

Sometimes (rarely) a serial number is expunged when an armory rebuilds a damaged rifle, but that usually is one line  through the old and a new serial number is placed next to  the original.

The "D arrow D" on top is an Australian service mark.

It is a 1912 by the looks of it as well the a 350 would be its original serial number and hopefully used , the crossed out number where more than likely a inventory number at the armourers in the unit . Inside the d^d they sometime put a numeral to what district is went to in australia .ther eis probably a good chance this went to Egypt Palestine or gallipoli with the anzacs .

Correct.  It was one of the abbreviations for the Defence Department.   Other abbreviations used in were a broad arrow inside a letter D and a letter D atop a broad arrow.
