Looking for a rear sight for my Snider carbine. The small 600 yard one. last part I need to finish this little .577

Any joy out there in boom stick land.
I`ve found lots, original and reproduction, mostly in the States and non of those vendors will ship to Canada. Hoosier Gun Works has an original but no shipping joy there.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Shiloh,

Interested to see that we have another Snider enthusiast on the forum! I have quite a few.  Sorry that I can't help since I have no spare sights. Which model is your carbine?

Terry

I hope I`m an enthusiast lols, this is the first I`ve acquired. Always been interested in these rifles and this one sort of fell in my lap. Needed some stock repairs but overall nice condition with a very good bore.

The receiver is stamped II**, 19.5ish" barrel with a carbine sight. Canadian ownership.
It has the sight leaf, its missing the slider and topper(sight V notched block). Is a 600 yrd carbine sight from what I`ve read, though the leaf is stamped `ELLIS`. This I could find no reference too??.
The butt plate tang is stamped  22 over SM, also no reference found.

Interesting that one of your carbines is stamped CMR which could be for Canadian Mounted Rifles?

Shiloh, Attached is a photo of my similar carbine, a Mk II** Cavalry.  My CMR stamped version is a Mk III originally manufactured for the East India Government before being offloaded on South Africa.

In South Africa C.M.R. stands for Cape Mounted Rifles, one of our most famous regiments.

I have a friend who is a retired gunsmith who recently closed his business which had run for many years. All his spares came home with him. It is just possible that he might have a Snider Carbine sight. I'll ask him, and if so, I can provide you with his contact details. Terry

Hi Shiloh,
My ex-gunsmith has asked for a photo. I attach what I expect you need. Please confirm if complete or if just leaf and slide.

Sorry, but in the absence of the requested information, the offer of gunsmith assistance has been withdrawn.

Update,
I got one from a gentleman just before Christmas for $30, he  mailed it out to me from Oshawa, around 3-4hrs aways. And lo and behold, Canada post has seemed to have lost it.
So still searching.

The postal Inspector must have thought it was one of those evil "high capacity double-barrelled fully semi-auto assault magazine clip sights" the Libs keep whining about and seized it.

No it was a local sale, Canada post seems to be dropping the ball a lot lately. This was sent letter mail so if it does some day show up, bonus I guess.
Customs here don`t care about old gun parts as long as it isn`t for one of the gazzilion newly prohibs we`re now straddled with.
The biggest thing for them is trying to figure out how to value the parts. They have no clue, Like all gov`t employees.

It would be faster to take a bicycle and go get it.

It's still faster than the Union army of 1861-65! They only moved 14 mile per year!

By Union Army standard it would take them seven days to get there.
