We used to play RUMOLLI with pennies. Now if we play we'll have to use nickles (until their gone!)

Anyone here remember the old, giant English pennies? Pre 1972. One guy figured out they were worth more as scrap than a a coin. He started getting them, melting them down selling the metal at a profit then using it to buy more pennies! He did it so much he caused a national shortage of pennies & it was a part of the change to decimal with its much smaller "Pence". They tried to arrest him but its only illegal to "deface" currency, because no-one would be so stupid as to destroy it!

Yes, I remember those, I have a few somewhere in my old coin collection. Not really a collection, just a metal tin that I’ve been putting odd coins in since I was a kid in the late 1960’s.

I never really noticed when pennies when the way of the Dodo in Canada. I do remember at a certain point you couldn't bring pennies to the bank and get money for them. Made a lot of "penny hoarders" plenty mad!

I went on a Rugby tour to England/Wales in '86. They had switched to a coin for the Pound. It was a small diameter but really thick so you could pretty much tell what it was when putting your hand in your pocket. Great idea! We of course, made our 2 dollar coin pretty much the same size as the one dollar coin. Easy to tell the diff when you look at them, not so much in the pocket.

I liked those £1 coins. When I lived in the UK in ‘88-‘90 it would buy a pint of beer in the pub. Wonder what it costs now in England for a pint?

Well, the Loony had some unexpected uses! A Peacekeeper edition of the Canadian Loony was minted in 1995 and those of us CF members that were deployed to be a member of UNDOF and had loonies in their possession could take them to a jeweler in Damascus who would cut out around the figures on the coin, add a ring for a necklace, and finally gold plate the coin. I had a few done and gave them away to my Engineer buddies in Canada but I made sure to keep one for myself.

Our team, the Brandon Barbarians, played five games in two weeks. Four matches in England and one in Wales. Sorry, can't remember the town in Wales. If it helps, the name had about 6 "y's", quite a few "k's", a few "w's", and I don't believe any vowels. And it wasn't pronounced any where's near how it was spelled. It was very hilly and there was a closed coal mine nearby... and always cloudy or raining. Does that help?😁

My late Father in law used to tape pennies to his cardboard target as the Bulls eye.

That pretty much describes any town in North or South Wales. There are no vowels in Welsh as we know them! The ddoouubbllee letters are their equivalent. They even have a separate sound than the same letter as a single. "DD" isn't "dudu", but "TH" as in "thee". Double "LL" is as near as you can pronounce it in English, "aghllhh", a lot like clearing your throat! Hence the "a Chluchinn an a Clachinn up, in The valleys"
There's a saying "Up in The Valleys": "If you can see the hills across the Valley it's going to rain. If you can't see the hills across the Valley it's already raining"!

In Canada, the one cent coin was last minted in 2012. 2 versions were minted, one was copper plated zinc, the other copper plated steel. I stashed away several mint rolls of each variety.
