seems everywhere we are seeing this bad weather , im going to add mine -

we will be at -20 f in the morning , the wind chills well below that , its expected to carry over for a couple days , slow warm up till the weekend then we might see the 40s - thats abnormal , and it wont lat more than a day or so . its winter here , long as the heat stays on we will survive ,

im not saying that we are in a fix like some areas of the country right now , im not we are not but this kind of cold is more than most experience , the heat is required and the electricity is as well , both are stable so far ,

One of the advantages of having an old house, is that it will have a chimney or two. I have a couple of wood burning stove's in our house. It does have electric radiators in all the rooms, but the electric is expensive now. The chimneys also transfer heat into the wall in the main bedroom.
It's always good to have two options for heating, one that requires no electricity is essential for times when there may be supply issues.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

Insurance companies HATE (or maybe love?) woddburners here! They rate your insurance policies much higher & you better keep accurate records of chimney / stove maintaiance, o/w your policy will be cancelled when you need to file a claim.

I`ve been heating our home for 37yrs with wood. Its a little more work than electric, gas or oil but its a darn site cheaper. I mean like $900-$1200/yr as opposed to $500-$900/ month.(prices for fuel wood is sky rocketing lately though)
The first yr we had our house we heated with electric, winter of `92 and our electric bill averaged over $600/month, that was nearly all our disposable income at the time, and it was tough with two babies!
We couldn`t have our house now if not for the ancient heating technology. Wink
I think it was $700 for this yrs wood, we had 5 face cords left over from last yr because of the tropical winter we had. This yr will be close, probably non left over, might even have to get a bit more in. This is the first REAL winter we`ve had here since 2015-16

*Our insurance is marginally more with wood heat than if without. Us rural folk have it easy that way* Mind you insurance is a huge scam anyway. If my house burns down, parish the thought, I`m sure they`d figure a way or try very hard to disqualify our claim. Its a game of take with very little give.

I love being able to have as much or as little heat as I want with out worrying about the bill.
Our House was build in 1887 and tends to be a bit drafty at times, the air`s always fresh  inside ...lol, love it.
But ya, it can be a bit messy at times.

We have a woodstove for heat & ambience @ the cabin. In summer theres the firepit outside. As it gets cooler the woodstove takes over. Takes some of the pressure off the propane furnace.

17 and snowing (again!) in North Texas with wind chill of 2.  Here's hoping we don't have a repeat of the Winter of 2021 when ERCOT screwed the pooch and we lost power for 3 days.  We have a fireplace and a good supply of wood as usual but I picked up a dual fuel 13.5 Kw generator (gasoline or propane) which I can tie into the electrical panel in about 10 minutes if necessary.

19 deg F this morning, pretty cold for Atlanta. Heading to the range, see how the cooler weather affects muzzle velocity of the Varget loads, should not be much.

yesterdays mid 40s turned to todays near 50s and our sunshine gave way to cloudy , my complaint is that the snow piles from clearing my drive and walks is daming the water [from the melt] in my driveway , its a couple inches deep and rising ,

washed my truck today but it was messy by the time i got home , we shall see what tomorrow brings - may wash it again ,

Finally!  Texas is back to a more normal temperature, it was 76 and sunny yesterday and wife and I went for a lovely walk through our city's park.  More of the same forecast for the next 10 days, YAY!

glad to hear it for you , this is not normal here in feb , or march or april even may - we often get snow those months , but i know we are experiencing cabin fever because my wife asked this morning if we should take the boat and motor home out of storage next week ,

its two months ahead of her normal request - she was calculating the cost of storage and i told her to forget it , we may well get bad weather in the next couple months in spite of it feeling like spring here right now , i can afford not to have them in the driveway at this point ,

i need to clean out my garage stall for the boat first and i dont need to be blowing snow around that camper , its too early no matter how nice it seems to be and no matter how much we might want it to be so ,

besides - this spring they are going to tear up our road and replace it , the utilities and add walks and curb and gutters , revised the storm drainage and alter the road location in front of our house , big assessments and another tax add on for the schools ,

we agreed to put it off till ened of march when we can get a better read on the weatrher but im pretty sure it will be foirst of may at the earliest , much as id like it as she sees it ,
