Looks like our Northern Rangers "new" Sako rifle can't stand the heat of the Canadian north! Apparently stocks are deaminating! Never had that problem with the Lee Enfields!

Long live the Lee Enfield.

Now that is frickin' hilarious! And it is estimated it will take 3 years and $10 million to replace the stocks. Add that into the initial massive cost and these are becoming quite the expense.

Is there no aspect of the Canadian Military procurement office that is competent?

My 1943 LB is for sale for $1,000 usd or $5,500 cdn if it's to the military.  Why should only large corporations be allowed to gouge the taxpayer.

I smell corruption... substandard construction. So many years to fill contract... right out of the government patronage playback. Shows you just what an endearing capable workhorse the LE was.

So they spent over 4,800 Canadian dollars each, for a bulk purchase of 6800 rifles. Which are bolt action.308 calibre.
Now they want to spend over 1400 dollar's on each replacement stock..
That sounds like a complete scam.

Yup. Why not dedicate a small division of the DND to tool up to make a "new" Lee Enfield exactly the same specs as a No4? The action and round (.303B) must have something to do with it's reputation of functioning in all climates. Wouldn't be sexy like the Sako (i dont really like the looks) but it is a proven bolt action weapon.

Why were the rifles equipped with a wooden stock anyway? Does in not bed properly in a composite stock?
I remeber when Harper was up there meeting with the Rangers about replacement rifles. He asked them what they thought would be best. The result was:
It should be in the "30 Cal range" (223 doesn't have enough power) it should be a bolt action (semi doesn't work well in the cold), should have a substantial magazine capacity with easy/ fast re-loading.(hard to re-load in bulky mittens).
Prettymuch described the Lee Enfield, near as I can see. They gave them Tikas instead. (Would probobly been faster & less expensive to make some new Enfields & ammo)

It isn't just the rifles.  Yesterday RCN Vice Admiral Topshee confessed that only 3 of Canada's 28 shipborne helicopters are currently airworthy and for a while last year NONE were!

The total cost of acquisition of the helicopters was 3.2 Billion with support and spare parts another 5.8 Billion....almost the same ratio of acquisition and support for the rifles.

It appears the "on again", "off again", "on again",  "Trump hurt my feelings", and "Now we're reconsidering" purchase of F35's is on hold to ensure Canadian taxpayers get the smallest bang for the biggest buck.

Hey, Yeah I've been there.
They fire salutes from a cannon with cork fishing floats as a wad, so they get a nice "BOOM" not a "Phut"!
The day I was there there was some bright spark sailing in close to show off to his friends. Then he SAW the "CANONBALL" heading right at him!
Big smile

I took my Black powder artillery training @ Ft.Niagara (years ago). At the end of it we get to live fire out into L.Ontario.
We had the flags flying indicating live ordinance..but these 2 dummies in a small open boat drifted out of the river & infront of us.We had the coast gaurd station right below so we notified them & they chased them away..TWICE.
The 3rd time the USCG said "they were warned - we aren't telling them again."
So- we had 3 guns (12 lb napoleon, 3" stnd ordinace & a parrot rifle). We opened fire. Shoulda seen 'em panic! Rods over the side, guy furiously trying 2 start engine. Good thing he did too - 3rd shot would have been a direct hit!

Did I ever tell you of the time my(now) wife & her best friend invaded Canada in a canoe from there?
We asked & they all told us they could paddle a canoe.
They couldn't!
We were in a second canoe & herded them gently back into the shoreline every time the swung slowly, but surely North Big smile Then when we finally made the trip to Smuggler's Creek, they tried to beach the canoe.
They rolled it over in 8" of waterConfused
Her best friend's husband was in my canoe & was: "Heh. its only 8" deep"
Then reality struck!
HEY THE BEER'S IN THAT CANOE!
Shocked
At which point he manfully waded over & raised the suitcase of Labatt's blue leaving his wife (& mine) floundering in the water!
Evil Smile
