Hi guys! I'm new to the forum and new to Webleys and British military markings in general. Can I get a bit of help in knowing if any of the markings on this Webley might give some insight into it's history? I include some photos. The rear of the grip has the following: 12 1892 4 (I didn't include the photo because there's nothing else)
I assume that the answer is that they are all just relatively standard acceptance and proof marks but just thought i'd check just in case. (Oh, by the way, I hope I'm posting in the correct part of the forum) Thanks again for any help.    |

second picture - the revolver went thru refurm in 1899 , not sure the mponth my magnifying glass would not let me see clearly , where it is originally marked a mkI there is no added stars [that i can see ?] that would indicate it was brought up to spec at that time , the backstrap making is probably an acceptance dat but could indicate a regiment in that year - i no longer have my reafferences , my notes on my mkI is that it had been back twice and brought to ** standards in 1915 - thats why i noted the date but no stars these were adopted in 1887 , accepted 01/31/1890 , manufactured till 1895 with about 40k made mine was a 93 , it was marked with ythe broad arrow on top an to the navy with an "N" a lot of these were purchased directly by individual officers and sometimes are marked to them , in those days the service didnt supply them , i hope ive given you a little help , oh , and thats a great looking example in very nice condition for its age

I can see what you mean by the numbers, now i know what they mean, thank you! below the '99 there is a symbol i don't recognise, possibly part of an anchor? below that is a 10 (with a faint 1 and clearer 0), I assume that means October? below that is what looks like an F

i believe that to be correct , im thinking a refurb for navy or more likely just a complete inspection and approval for continued service , but it could be just an inspection mark too , obviously no changes made or they would be indicated by *s
skennerton had a nice reference book on the webleys , mine is gone with the majority of my collection , i only have my no1 mkV , my no2 mkIV , my albion mkI** and my two trainers mkIV and mkVI left ,

Thanks again, that's really helpful context. I’m sorry to hear about your collection, although I have to say the ones you’ve kept still make for an impressive lineup. I’ve heard good things about Skennerton’s books, I think my local gun shop has some, so I'll take a look and see if they have the Webley. Thanks again!

dont feel bad about my collection , i sold it willingly to insure it went to good homes that knew what they had i kept the ones i wanted to keep and most everything went to collectors including here the one thats missing in this photo is the mkIV trainer - it was being cleaned at that time .....  |
