There’s a marking above the serial number and build date on my 1943 No. 4 MK I Maltby that reads “A 69.” Anybody know what this stamp means?

Not sure, but it seems like a manufacturers code?

Perhaps a steel batch code.  Seen more than a few like that (a lot on LBs) and it’s never really been identified.  So that’s my guess.

Just from a few pics I have handy, I have B24 on a 1945 LB, and J3 on a 1943 LB.  I’ve seen many, many more.

All great info, thanks

I took it apart today to get out the copious amounts of cosmoline and discovered it’s a numbers matching rifle

As DD noted, it seems to be present on a lot of Long Branch rifles. I need to check mine as I don't remember if it's on that one or not.
