There’s a marking above the serial number and build date on my 1943 No. 4 MK I Maltby that reads “A 69.” Anybody know what this stamp means?

| Perhaps a steel batch code. Seen more than a few like that (a lot on LBs) and it’s never really been identified. So that’s my guess. |

All great info, thanks I took it apart today to get out the copious amounts of cosmoline and discovered it’s a numbers matching rifle |
