Wanted to find out about a rifle I recieved from a friend. Markings include,  "U.S.Property, England w/strange symbols below it, 78(C?)0895 B, 
S(5?) No.4 mk1*, sorry, I haven't figured out how to attach pivs. Im new and old!

You have a Savage manufactured No.4/MK1*. Those numbers are the serial numbers assigned to it at the Chicapee Falls manufacturing plant. The rifle is part of the 'lend-lease' program and the US PROPERTY stamping reflects that fact. The 'S' stamp is a squared off looking letter signifying Savage manufacturing.
