The P-14 originally started out as a .276 caliber, but with the outbreak of WW1 the British decided to stick with the .303 british caliber, as that is what they were already producing for the No.1 Mk.III rifles.  So, they rebarreled the P-14 to .303 British.  The P-17 was a 30.06 caliber that was created from the US needing to produce a gun that shot their particular caliber. However, from what I understand, they are pretty close in appearance to the P-14.  That's just what I've been told, I have never actually seen one up close.

The Pat14 uses standard .303 dia bullets which start at .312 . Any standard Factory bullet/.303 ammo will feed through your Pat14 ! You'd be hard pressed to find any still in the .276 as I think apart from a couple of experimental models they were all converted over to .303

O.k., lets take the silliness out of this thread and correct a few errors.

The rifles now known as the Pattern 14 is essentially the same as the Pattern 13 rifle, a Mauser type bolt action designed to fire the revolutionary new .276 Enfield. After some fairly embarassing losses at the hands of Boer commandoes using the 7x57 round Old Blighty decided to update to a rimless 7mm cartridge with serious thump. Unfortunately was plagued with 2 problems. Firstly, it was practically on par with the 7mm Rem Mag meaning soldiers complained of recoil and inaccuracy as a result. And secondly, the Britsh government ran out of money when WW1 arrived. As such the P13 was adapted to fire 303 British and renamed the P14. They ordered a reasonable amount of these rifles from US manufacturers only to renige on the purchase later crying poor. As such the US Govt took a good hard look at the P14 decided it was perfect for reconversion back to a rimmed cartridge, namely their relatively new 30-06 cartridge, and rebarreled and altered the bolt face and other parts accordingly. It was then renamed(again!) the M17 and many saw service in WW1 in the hands of US servicemen.

P14 rifles as such don't fire anything different to a SMLE or Martini Enfield. In fact the P14 was possibly adapted with the MkVII round(174gn spitzer @ 2440fps) than any other model of .303 service rifle.

We should clear up just a little more here!  The "Pattern 14" and "Pattern 17" designations were used primarily within the factories producing the British .303 and the US Model .30 caliber rifles.  It was never intended to be used outside by the mainstream military/civilian user as a proper designation for these rifles as neither is correct.  They are more slang terms than proper.  The other thing is that during the war build-up of arms, that is the predicted requirement, it was less expensive for the US government to convert already prepared British arms from the .303 to the US .30 caliber than to retool the big three factories.  Retooling to produce the US Model 1903, which was a consideration at the time, wouldhave been very expensive and time prohibitive.  Just my two cents  ;-)
