I shot this doe at about 3:00 saturday.  A group of about 8-10 does were walking by about 30-35 yards off to the left of my tree stand.  I picked out the biggest one and pulled the trigger on the Ol' Ithaca.  You have to respect an animal that can run 50-80 yards with a double lung hit!  Now roo can stop busting my balls about not getting anything this year.

I need to get my rear in gear to do the same thing. I've lived in the woods darn near my whole life and still havn't killed any of those elusive deer. Our problem round here is that our property(my dad's and white rhino's) is bordered by a hunting club that does a whole lot of illegal crap. Such as last week when i was home, they ran dogs all night long on the deer. Dog season doesn't open untill december.

I know this though that my .270 wby mag is sighted in to 100yds and im running 130grn psp remington with 56grns of imr behind it so i shall see what shall happens...

HM. Our US cousins have some very strange Hunting rules & regulations compared with ours , Some States only allow Shot Gun hunting or Hand gun hunting, some have a season for Bow Hunting ,Black powder ,Shot gun & then rifle! I'm sure that somebody can fill us in better on this !

See over here in Auz  in most States there is only a Duck Season ! Anything Feral is considered open season all the Time this includes Rabbits ,Foxes ,Goats ,Pigs ,Camel ,Crows ,Dingos & Water Buffalo!
As a Pro Roo shooter I had to have a special permit covered under the Native animal section for the culling there of & later for the use of Human consumption !

We got seasons for all shootable livestock excluding vermin! ie Foxes wood pigeon rabbits. Pheasnts ( and peasants ) grouse, partridge, snipe woodcock and duck all have open seasons that overlap. Cost of a days shooting for say 100 pheasant is around £4000.Deer shooting is expensive minimum calibre for deer is 243 no shotguns or bows allowed and definately NO DOGS for coursing deer. Infringements can lead to confiscations of weapons your car if you have 1 parked up nearby and a very very hefty fine.

The "zone" I was hunting in allows shotgun, blackpowder and bow only.  In central NY where I was hunting they think a rifle is too dangerous because of the distance it can shoot.  The more open areas such as the Catskills and Aderondacks allow rifle.  I just got a muzzleloader so Once I sight that in that will be my weapon of choice but the Ithaca is good out to about 70 yards for me.

Down Here We have Muzzel loader season Bow , ( Muzzy season alowes any rifle with exposed hammer that has a round developed befor year 1900 to be used)
Then Bow season then Stalking/still hunt season ( sitting on stand or walking ) then Dog season ... wich I hate the most ( running the Deer with Dogs to the hunter... I dont call that Hunting...)
We do not have to have posted signs any more either... If you dont know where you should be hunting then you should not be hunting....and you will be arrested for trespass.
We also have Duck , Quail , Rail , Gallanuill , Squirrell ,and the others ....
That all over lap or run together...
With my legs going to the way side I have not done much Hunting this year. I just went and put some corn out for the Deer when Cookie Monster got hear Sunday .. first time I went into the woods this year.
Maybe Me and Cooki will make us a hunt before He leaves afrter Thanks Giving ...

Amen to that one Brother !!!!!!!The Number of times I shot a Euro on the side of a hill or mountain without thinking of the fact I wouldn't be able to drive up next to it & then had to walk up by torch light & drag it down ! Remembering that time is money Cry They were the shots you never talked about !!!!!!! I still remember the Lecture I got in my early years as a Shooter in the NT whilst Hunting Water Buff ! I shot a Buff right in the middle of a Swamp ,Jeez it was a great shot ,about 200yrds from memory with no thought on how we were going to pull it out of the swamp as it was too far to get a winch cable to it ! My Then Boss was not a Happy Man & he was not known for having the Milk of human kindness !

So rhino for the Muzzle loader season you could use something like a Handi Rifle in 303, 6.5*55 or 45/70 legally?

And thanks for explaining your different regulations to me.

And I look like I am in for a shock when I go and visit roo in Febuary if it is snowing over there already Confused

Where's Artic warfare school for us Aussies? New Zealand? Because even our alpine areas don't get that cold and only have snow for two or so months.

The Only Regiment that has anything to do with Arctic warfare is SASR1 & that is conducted in New Zealand & to a lesser degree the Antarctic. In my time we did actually did our basics  in the Alpine areas.
