Didn't want to clutter Zed's thread (baby) with a semi-related question.

My No. 5 has the refurb date stenciled on the stock.  The wood is really dark and I'd like to try pulling some of the grime out of it and cleaning it up a bit.  Is there any safe way to do this without harming the paint in the refurb date?

The accepted safe way as far as I know is to wrap the wood in paper towels, then place that in a large black plastic garbage bag and lay it out in the hot sun for a whole day. The gunk will be absorbed into the paper towel from the heat turning the gunk into a semi-liquid state. Worked for me in the past.

Ive seen it done with a barrel and heat lamps , the stock and what ever else needs to have the gunk taken off placed under the barrel and heat lamps aimed on it .....
Didnt get to see how it came out , I was buy the guys house looking to get some Enfields in a crate that He thought he had , but he was wrong ...never been back since !!

depending on the paint being applied over the gunk you may still loose it , id do a color match and be prepared if you wish to save that detail ,

change the paper towels from time to time , and place in a exposure to the sun with a bit of wind screen for maximum effects

You may have to wait a bit for that "Hot sun" it's bloody freezing here!
