The subject of which version of the Pattern-1907 Bayonet Scabbard 'Frog-Stud' is correct for WW1... has always been one of contention. Why? That is one question in which I have no answer to give. There are two variations of the 'Frog-Stud' in use, the 'PEARDROP', and the 'ROUNDEL'.  Both versions are period correct for WW1. I have maintained this since the begining my collecting career. Many refuse to accept that the 'Roundel' is WW1 period correct, referring to it as the WW2 variant. Why? I have seen many '07' collectors refuse a scabbard with the 'Roundel', and swap over a scabbard which has a 'Peardrop'... discarding the 'Roundel' in open disgust! For some unexplained reason, there seems to be a myth which has grown up and attached itself to the 'Roundel'. When did this misinformation begin? How did it start? What was the reason? All of those questions I'm certain we will never be able to solve. I personally have no answer. All that one can do is search out the period correct information in reference to the items concerned, then endeavour to re-educate those who have been misinformed. We must also do our best to block out such inaccuracies for those who are entering the hobby. In order to set the seal, the following is taken from the official 'LOC's = List of Changes. 19th November 1915. LOC-17883 - Scabbard, Sword Bayonet, Pattern-1907, No.1, MK.II. Modifications which may be embodied in future manufacture. Furniture... A circular, instead of pear-shaped stud fitted to the locket. Ends of locket and chape left square instead of being figured. My personal view on the above, is that the change was inline with the need to manufacture items required at a faster pace. Thus... the need to streamline production. It is far easier to manufacture a 'Circle' and 'Straight edge'... than it is to manufacture an edited custom design. For '07' collectors, I would suggest an idea which I practice in my own collection. For pre-1916 manufactured items, I endeavour to match the bayonet with a 'Peardrop'. For '07' Hooked Quillions, its a must for the 'Peardrop', for a 'Roundel' would look seriously out-of-place. For 1916 onwards... anything goes! ------------- This is MY rifle, there are many like, but this one... is MINE! |
