Gents, a friend of mine with far more experience than I has recommended using Vitavouri powder, saying it is more consistent quality than the french made Tubal 3000 that I am currently using. The Vitavouri site shows 3 possible powders for .303 British with 174 gr orgives. They are N135, N140 and N540.
My question is which one is the most suitable for target shooting with the .303? I am currently using boat tail Sierra Match King 174 grain orgives.
He also advised I should junk the Winchester primers and use Federal Match primers. He has competed for many years, but not with a .303! Any advice from the more experienced target shooters will be shooters will be appreciated.
As a comparison, I carried out a velocity test yesterday, and the results are reasonable, but not entirely consistent. The average speed was 2450 ft/second of 10 rounds. but one round very low at 2427ft/sec and one round high at 2469ft/sec. The remaining rounds between 2440 and 2460 which is not too bad. But 2 round's out of 10 off is not great!

Well I have decided to take this one step at a time and try out the Federal Match primers with my current loads. See how I get on then go from there.

Keep us posted on your results, Zed. I like to see what people are coming up with in their tests.

41 grains of N140 with federal primers will give you 2500 fps. I've used this load for years and it's always been consistant.

Thanks for that info Tony. There seems to be supply problems for Vitavouri in France at the moment. So I will see how I go with the Tubal 3000 and swap to the N140 when I get some.

It's the same here, some of the guys are using TR 140 which is supposed to be very close to N140 in performance. I can't comment on it as I've never used it. But from comments I've heard it's a very good powder.
