Found this interesting piece of kit while browsing a french site, a tripod support for holding the rifle; anyone seen one before?  it's expensive!

Yep they were for training new shooters things like sight picture, alignment & so on. Most units had one lurking in the back of the armory somewhere.

I have one, but it's missing the elevation adjustment screw. As Shamu said, used for training purposes. Mine is slightly different to one in your link, having steel legs. In the LoC I have come across a few variations of the design.

I think 300 Euros is a bit steep though!

To me it would seem so, but I don't really know how common or rare those have become.
Every unit used to have 1 or 2 of them, but for decades they weren't used & so may have simply been scrapped as obsolete, making them rare or collectable.

Add to that the fact I'm used to U.S. pricing & collectability standards & I'm lost for stuff in Europe.

MaxP , it would seem to me that you could fabricate the missing adjuster from hardware store bits , perhaps not identical , but close enough and workable ,

Max P, if I could get that rifle and the stand for 300 Euro I'd be well happy!! That is a very nice piece indeed. Has it got Billy Sing's name on it?

It has a left and a right handed thread so winding gives double the movement per revolution. I have gathered a few bits to fabricate one at some stage... a simple turnbuckle set into a bigger bolt will do.
I suppose I should get off my butt and machine a complete new one, but time is the killer.

The price probably reflects the rarity, but then you need to factor in your need! The one for sale looks very nice, and probably older than mine!
I find it the best way of photographing rifles.
