Ok well thats not true, I'm planning a feral hog hunt with a friend in the next months. I'm planning on taking my enfield, from what i've read feral pigs are pretty tough little buggers, anyone have a preferred load for the .303? I was thinking of Hornady 150grn sp.

I'd use 180 grain Remington Corelokt ammunition if I were hunting feral hogs.Some of those pigs have tough skin and tough personalities. It all depends on what you are used to using already and which animals you have hunted and dispatched. Is your rifle a sporterized rifle or full length military rifle? Being from Florida, are you taking a side arm as well on your hunt? I have read that the Glock 20 10mm is a preferred sidearm for hunting ferals.

i was advised by a good friend in texas that the 308 was the choice , but its pretty close to the 303 in my mind , and the 3006 so im going to say its good to go

lets go with:
Outside of squirrels and air rifles my main targets have been paper.
it's a Supreme 41 (sporter)
I know its pathetic but since it's my first "Hunt" and my buddy is an out of stater we'll be hunting with a guide on private land.
308 is popular, as is 30-06, frankly with the controlled expansion line of "hog ammo" the 223 is very popular.
If I could afford a big bore sidearm I would.

I may end up with 180grain we'll see what my rifle likes best.

My PH Supreme 1945 Longbranch LOVES 180 grain. That rifle has been a real bone collector for me and it's previous owner for decades.

Ive only used my 7 Mag when I went on hunts with Doc. Doc used his 1903 sporter that his Uncle gave him. His Father used to hunt them with his .45 cal Muzzle loader and dropped them like nothing....
I also have an old Buddy from High School that is going on a Hog Hunt with his AR , in 5.56 mm so When I here back from from him I will let you know how he did !!!

most of my friends that currently hunt hogs have switched up from the 223 AR to the 308 AR , i think there is something to be said for that knockdown power

One thing to keep in mind is where the kill zone is on a hog.  Google it and you will be surprised how low their spinal column is coming out of their head and how small and far up front the heart lung area is.  There is a lot of good stuff online about that, but I would think any 303 round would take one out.  I have a friend, a little crazy, but he hunts them with a 22 mag.  If I am hunting something that will attack me and could kill me I want more than that.  He says he likes a challenge.

They have a gristle & muscle pad at the sternum too. It protects them when fighting other boar. You have to punch through that just to get to the boiler room.

.303 in 150 grn will knock down ANYTHING on this continent.
I don't understand why people argue that point.Personally, I only step up to 180 grn when I'm hunting moose.
The hitting power of .303 is quite something. I have shot good sized bucks in the past, and actually flipped them backwards in the air in a summersault affect.
I cant see "using a hammer, to kill a fly". Its going to be just as dead.

In Arkansas you can legally hunt them with a .22 rf. You do need to shoot them in the ear with a .22 RF & they drop like a rock as long as your aim (& nerve) holds out!Pig

that's cuz 30.06 is considered "America's Caliber".
Un-patriotic to kill with anything else!
During the 2nd twirl at war, the commonwealth BEGGED the American gov't to use 303..standardized ammo would make for easy supply between allies. The N.I.H. mantra raised it's head again, so it never happened.Would have made a big difference..prob would've saved lives and shortened the war, as well.

Funny thing, one time I was talking guns with this ole boy at a pawn shop....He asked what I was using that season. I told him I was using my .308 He said that was to small not enough knock down...I should get me a 30-06 !!!!
Then he got pissed when I told him the .308 was developed to replace the 30-06 and has pretty much the same performance!!
The .308 is on par with the 30-06, because when better powders were developed, and those powders could do the same thing that the powder used in the 30-06 but taking up less space. The .308 was born!!!

Some even get all bent out of shape when you tell them the .270 is only a necked down 30-06, and the .243 is a necked down .308 !!!!!

this reminds me that I need to make a case to hold all my laser bore sighters !!!!

I use mine for iron sights as well. They get you in the 'ballpark' so to speak, then fire about 20 rounds to get your mojo going and you should be good to go. We ALWAYS laser bore sight our scoped rifles after camp has been made. We start with 50 yards bore sights, then move on to live fire sighting. Good to go after that, never had any issues. The rest is up to the shooter.

The "Pig Sticker" bayonet that some of us have on our Enfield Rifles gets it's name from just such a spear traditionally used to hunt boar.  Often from horseback.
I am sure some of the lads from across the pond would know more about it.

Hoadie, there are so many western slopes because of all the mountains around here but the area of my deer camp is on the western slope of several smaller mountains and in a large and very deep valley. The sun obviously rises in the east and sets in the west so a western slope of any mountain would be where the early rising deer come down to drink from the creeks and rivers. Did you have a certain 'western slope' you were wondering about? I may be able to nail down where you are talking about.

Hi gents, I've just registered so I can add a few helpfull contributions & learn from others experience. Here in New Zealand the 303 calibre has taken (& still does) all our big game including Wapiti (elk) & Samba & I know from personal experience that even the biggest boars are anchored on the spot with the 150gn when hit in the riight spot. I load the 150gn Hornady sp or 180 gn Speer sp for most of my hunting & when they become too expensive to buy or in short supply I'll "hollow point " FMJ's so the point of impact will be much the same as the 180 gners just remember the fighting shield that boars have over their front quarters which can be over 2 inches thick grisle on the big boys. I don't use a scope for the Mk111 but I can usually drop the pigs& red deer  out to about 150yds ok, even with these old eyes.
Happy hunting.

A laser bore sighter is wonderful, as long as you remember to take it out of the bore before you shoot. There's a really good pic of  rifle somewhere online with a banana-peel barrel where someone forgot before they shot. It's a bit fussy, but I'll stick with my old optical Bushnell.

This makes the excellent point that shot placement is a far more important criterion than the caliber. I believe that any of the .30 rifles mentioned in this thread will do the work with bullets 150 gr. and up, including my old Winchester 94 in .30-30.

so I hunted for two days from stands never seeing anything.

then I spent most of the morning and afternoon trying to jump shoot hogs in dense scrub and marshes. It was humid, dark, and about 95+F, After missing three i realized why they made a jungle carbine!

So we hopped in the truck with the dogs and i grabbed my .357. two at nearly point blank through the lungs

I don't know the current technique in the U.K. but here we basically treat them like most pork, marinade, dry rub, & smoke for 12 hours or so.
Pulled, smoked pork is very flavorful & not at all gamey unless you get an old boar. For some reaon sows are less gamey than boars in general, I don't know why.

Here's my preferred recipe:

Pork slow smoked for pulling & BBQ. I do mine in three steps: marinade, dry rub, and then barbecue sauce.

Here is the marinade:
* 1/2 cup soy sauce
* 1/3 cup sugar
* 10 cloves garlic, minced
* 3 scallions chopped
* 3 tablespoons sherry (or brandy)
* 2 tablespoons roasted sesame oil
* 2 tablespoons roasted sesame seeds
* 1/2 teaspoon fresh grated ginger

Here is the dry rub:
* 1/2 cup brown sugar
* 1/4 cup paprika
* 1 tablespoon black pepper
* 1 tablespoon salt
* 1 tablespoon chili powder
* 1 tablespoon garlic powder
* 1 tablespoon onion powder
* 1 teaspoon cayenne

Here is the barbecue (dipping sauce):
* 1 cup ketchup
* 1/4 cup water
* 1/4 cup vinegar
* 1/4 cup brown sugar
* 3 tablespoons olive oil
* 2 Tablespoons roasted sesame oil
* 2 tablespoons paprika
* 1 tablespoon chili powder
* 2 cloves garlic, minced
* 1 teaspoon cayenne

(Chaz option)

1 tsp grainy mustard

3 tbsp mole asses!
 1 tsp ginger.

Obviously you marinade the ribs or any meat for at least 12 hours. Then drip dry. Then apply dry rub.
I use hickory wood, apple wood, and any fruitwood. I built a smoker. I use wood fires only, (gas and electric smokers haven't been invented yet). I smoke 'em low heat. (Start at 180F and move it up to 260 F) As you all know, you just need to get the internal temperature to 165 and checked with a good meat thermometer. Usually "all day" is what shooting for in smoking time. Around 12 hours. Pan of water inside to help keep moist. I like barbecue sauce on mine cooked on not just for dipping so the last hour I baste with the barbecue sauce nice and thick. Sometimes I use my special secret procedure of basting with clarified butter first for about a half hour 3 or four applications BEFORE I begin the basting with the sauce.
These ribs will knock your socks off. I still think the wood fire---apple wood is my hands-down favorite---is what separates amazing smoked/barbecued food from stuff that is good but not incredible..

Option 2, the Andy version.

BBQ Sauce
...
Cook
1 medium sweet onion chopped fine
in 1tbsp butter until transparent

then add

2 cups Heinz Catsup
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp Lea & Perrins
2 tsp chilli powder
1/2 tsp red or green Tabasco

Cook until boiling and then tip into a foil loaf pan (don’t use a regular loaf pan unless you plan on throwing it out after) cover with aluminum foil and cut 5 or 6 one inch slits in the foil. Put in the smoker with the meat a couple of hours before the meat is done. Keep the wood chips going!

You can cook in the oven if you add 3/4 tsp of Liquid Smoke -- not as good, but sometimes you just can’t wait for smoking weather!

Country style ribs are usually cheap and cook up really nice. Try marinating them in the fridge for a day or so with
1pt water 1 cup cider vinegar, 1/4 cup brown sugar (or molasses), 1 tsp garlic, 1 tbsp salt, 1 tsp hot sauce.

Good eatin!
