I have only been shooting my Mark III* of recent for abut 9 months. It has iron sights.  I shoot targets at my range that limits distance for iron sights at 50 yds. I have only used PRVI Partizan 150 & 180 gr. soft points. I would like to experiment with rounds made by other manufacturers. Do any of you have suggestions. I know that I should simply experiment, but do you have suggestions about where I should start?

I note that Hornady has a 150 gr. Interlock Spire Poiint that costs more than the Partizins. I also note that Remington sells a round that is more pricy than the Hornady cartridges, and that Winchester is even more pricy than the Remington.

I have been experiencing a bit of a feeding problem when my magazine is fully loaded. When I remove 3 cartridges it seems to feed fine. I was wondering whether the spire pointed Hornady may address that issue? I used the rifle deer hunting 45 years ago when I was a boy. There were no feeding problems then when the magazine was full with 10 rounds. It very well may be an issue with my magazine or its spring instead of the shape of the bullet.

Next time your at the gunshop, grab a box of every brand of .303 there is and jot down the results pending if your chasing tighter groups at the range, and by the sounds of it you are. I use Highland(PRVI Partizan) brass and projies, sometimes Sierra. The PPU stuff is ok in my books, even from commercial boxes, been shooting it for donkeys years.
And the wildlife here down at the property don't know the difference between my roll ya owns and a 40 dollar a box commercial stuff.Thumbs Up

As for the feeding probs, I do recall when I was starting out roll ya owns, experimenting with OAL my 41 was having a hard time the longer the round, might be the mag:spring, tabs ect being skewiff? I dont know but I hovered around mil spec OAL and all good again. Some commercial stuff from memory has different OAL.Whats binding the projie when feeding? Or the first 3 rounds are pointing upwards?
Just trying to picture it in my head

Do you need to load the full 10 rounds? I tend to load five at a time, but thats mainly because the competitions I shoot require 10 shots in 2 lots of 5. For hunting I would think if you haven't hit what you want with the first 5 rounds you might as well throw rocks Wink. However it should work with 10 rounds so it would be worth looking at the magazine tabs and maybe adjust a little, and possibly the spring. If you are loading your own then as Allan mentioned, the overall length can play a part as well.

Both my III* rifles feed well, with everyone's ammo, full mag or not.
When hunting, I usually only have 5 in the mag.As Zed says..if you can't hit your game in 5 rounds...your no hunter, to be sure.
As for your feeding problem, are the "ears" of the magazine at the proper angle?

To respond to some of your questions more directly, I do not have a direct need to load the magazine fully. I now only shoot paper targets at a range. However, having once used the rifle with a fully loaded magazine, for some illogical reason I miss not having that capacity. As one of you said, the clip is suppose to work at full capacity.

I have a somewhat embarrassing  and somewhat humorous story about not being much of a hunter if I need the magazine fully loaded. When I was 14 years old, about 52 years ago, I was whitetail deer hunting with this rifle in a tree stand in East Texas. My magazine was fully loaded. A big buck with a large rack (11 points) came carelessly on a "rut" within about 75 yards of my stand. I fought the temptation of "buck fever" nervousness quite successfully while I made my first shot. It was at an awkward angle for me. That shot only wounded the deer, but instead of running away (and dying a slow death), he began to run back and forth in front of my stand at great speed. Buck fever overwhelmed me as the deer was very quickly running to and fro. I shot all but one round in my magazine. On many of those missed shots, I could see dirt fly just beyond the deer. When I shot the last round, the deer thankfully became disabled. I climbed down from the tree, put about 5 more rounds in the magazine, and advanced toward the deer. On the 3d shot, it was over for the deer. The misery for both of us ended.

Obviously, I was shaking and breathing hard when it was over. Buck fever had command of me after the first shot. Some of those shots may have been more directed more toward clouds than the deer for all I know. Friends hunting near me could not imagine what was going on.

So, I obviously needed more rounds than the clip would hold. Having once needing that many may explain my desire to have that capacity again. Back in those days, I always said that I was a good hunter, but a bad shot. These days I am working hard to improve upon my marksmanship. I have had some success in doing so. On that day, however, it is true that I was not much of a hunter.

S&B 180gr is deadly accurate out of my sported #4. Cabelas sells S&B under their Herters brand.
No feeding issues either.

I made that an active link for you.
Unfortunately many of the illustrations seem to be broken links.
