This No4 is for sale in France, it has a nice PH sight and looks well finished, but would it be safe in .308? It still has a .303 type magazine;

There was a whole saga of if 7.62 conversions were safe a while back.
IIRC the final result was that a specific lot of cadet rifles had a defect.
I think you'd be fine as long as you avoided the "specialty" .308 rounds, like the "managed Recoil" or the "light magnum".

Part of the whole hoo-hah was the 7.62/.308 pressure "difference" thing.

The mag may be a .303 one that is just being used as a single-shot loading platform.

It has some nice Parker Hale sights on it, but it's still too expensive. I'd need to try it at the range to see how it shoots before making an offer. If it was in .303 I might be interested though.

Might be a Parker Hale conversion.
I almost bought on brand new in 1978, think from memory they were only about $200. Kicking myself now that I didn't buy one.
PH did a couple of different versions on them, one had the 303 mag and the other was set up with a 308 mag. It was more expensive.

If it's a proper Parker Hale conversion then it might be worth looking at. I think I'll bung them an e-mail and see what it's about.

the Canadian arsenal conversions to 308 used the original 303 mag , because the rifle was only meant to be fed one round at a time . the Enforcer 308 rifle was a specially made mag with a slightly different mag well .

my charnwood conversion used the original enfield no4 magazine box , its been a long while gone but i think it had a slightly modified follower tho ,

IIRC the .308 conversions had the ejector in the magazine somehow as the rimless case was too small a diameter to contact the receiver wall like the .303 did.

Hi Canuck,

Sorry but the sight pictured on the rifle is a P/H 5C target sight, a P/H5A would be fitted to the Enfield SMLE rifle not a No4 action.

The .303 mag was used for single feed on later rifles such as the Enforcer/Envoy/L39A1 & P/H 4t's/Charnwood Conversions they used a dedicated .308/7.62 mag different outer shape and internals these now can fetch £150+ in the UK.

So Gent's; does it look like a Parker Hale converted rifle? Or is at a Bubba with a Parker Hale sight?

Hi Zed,

Sorry can not be 100% sure it's a real Parker Hale or made up. It's got all the correct bit's on it, later type 5C sight fitted correctly, No8/Envoy butt, shaped P/H style handguard with fitted rail on the underside, fixed to the barrel foresight tube, you get both fixed and removable types, trigger guard mounted sling swivel. I would have to see any proof marks/PH stamps to be sure. Correct P/H target rifle range in price from £250-650 so this one is middle priced in Euros.

I think the rifle was not sold and currently no longer on the site. If it is put back up for sale I may take a look as it was only about 1/2 hour from were I live.
