| he!!o everyone, well I took my No4 out for the second time this weekend and again I am very pleased with it accuracy. Wasnt shooting groups, just making contact with steel at different distances. Now, on to the reason for this post...every shot I was letting off was resulting in a sharp pain in my shoulder. I thought it strange based on the fact that my hunting rifle is chambered in .300 win mag and I shoot that fairly comfortably. Also strange because the .303, in all respects isnt really a thumper. So long story short, because i am not using a shooting rest i am forced to lean a little too forward and rest it on the table i was shooting off of to stable the rifle without a rest. That resulted in the stock being directly on my COLLARBONE! Geez that hurt so much! Lol. So then I shot it standing and I was able to see that I needed to adjust my form to place the stock in its proper place. Thus eliminating all discomfort. Because I am not shooting off a rest, I just thought "oh well, I guess this rifle is just going to hurt." But thankfully i realized my mistake, corrected it and now im able to enjoy my rifle. Sometimes I think we forget to get back to the basics and forget about proper form because we feel we know how to shoot all firearms. Well, thanks for reading and take care. |

I'm quite skinny; so when shooting from a prone position the recoil tends to be uncomfortable if I'm not shouldering the rifle properly. I use a US Marine type jacket with a thin shoulder re-inforcement that helps spread the load a bit then it's fine. In some ways it helps your shooting, because you concentrate a bit more on getting a consistent position and that helps accuracy. ------------- It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice! |

Being fairly small in stature what I do is to bring my shoulder pocket in line with the buttplate before shooting. It allows me to grasp the forend in front of the magazine swivel, get a better sight picture with the aperture rear & never have the butt contacting the collarbone. ------------- Don't shoot till you see the whites of their thighs. Speaking of consistency in shooting, and also missing any natural padding where the metal meets the bone so to speak. Since I do so much with an AR15 that I resorted to making a little tactile reference point on the comb of the stock for my cheek on my other rifles. Once I feel it on my cheek and my hand placement is done I know I have a proper cheekweld, shoulder placement and eye relief without having to think about it. One less thing for my fragile mind to deal with. Throwing it out there fwiw. ------------- If I get knocked down 6 times I will get up 7 times. |

I have a slip on recoil pad on my 303 and 7x57 as both have metal plates and also I have pretty long arms. They slip on and off very easily and are very comfortable. I often use on the gecado air rifle to give a bit more length. ------------- If farming was easy, then everyone one would do it. |

You reminded me of oneof my more memorable momments as Range Officer. I guy was having trouble sighting in his new rifle. He asked if I would do it for him. After i sat down at the bench I learned I have just agreed to sight in a 375 H&H. That was on a Saturday but by the middle of the week I had full movement in my arm back. ------------- Have a Nice Day If already having a nice day please disregard |

My Father-in-law made a one size fits all slip on pad for his shooting some years ago. He currently is 94 and still shoots once and a while. He took a old time leather bullet pouch and lined it with a coiled of up roll of three inch wide cotton towel. The short side of the coil of the coil goes on the butt plate and the draw strings of the bag get tied to the stock and trigger guard. He add or removes padding depending on the gun size. My 375 has such a nice recoil it is only a pleasure to shoot. It gives a nice long recoil, not sharp at all. I once set out to check some new reloads with various charges and bullet weights. I think I shot 10 groups of 3 shots with 10 minute breaks between. I could feel it the next day. It was a deep muscle pain, much like going to the gym. Not overly unpleasant. I've had worse after a good afternoon bird shooting. I have also found the best remedy for "recoil shoulder". Take 12 ice cold beers. Administer one after the other, using the trigger arm, into your mouth. Each beer must be administered within 30 minutes of each other. Like antibiotics the course must be completed. ------------- If farming was easy, then everyone one would do it. |

There must be something wrong with me. My No4 has a brass buttplate & the No5 sporter a ribbed hard plastic. I don't have a problem with either even when I shot a lot.  ------------- Don't shoot till you see the whites of their thighs. (Unofficial motto of the Royal Air Force) |

Funny thing is my No4 has a Short, but the NO4's sporter stock is longer than a MilSpec "Long" by about 3/4"! I prefer the Short, not having real long arms, but neither really beats me up. ------------- Don't shoot till you see the whites of their thighs. (Unofficial motto of the Royal Air Force) |

Short is nice as you can tuck your elbow in. Makes a nice steady stance. Too long and your are reaching out. Stock doesn't come into the shoulder nicely. When shooting at the table I rest the front (where your front hand goes) on the bags. The front arm is then placed on the top of the rear on the stock just ahead of the jaw. Very stable and takes a fair whack of the recoil. A check piece on the rear of the stock also helps dissipate recoil into the face and acts as counter pressure to the trigger arm. Most useful when you tuck the arm into the sling. ------------- If farming was easy, then everyone one would do it. |

No comment on the above!  Alex my lad was shooting a #4 mk 1 with a brass buttplate at 9 years old wearing a t shirt and recoil never bothered him at all. The funny thing is I always used to shoot in shirtsleeve order. I felt the thick wool jackets gave the rifle a running start at you so I went down to the cotton shirt to fire! I used to luv the newbies who folded & wadded berets under the shoulder for extra padding! also... remember that one of the advantages of the LE butt stock over the one piece stock used by other rifles is that the LE butt stock can be canted to the left or right to further accommodate the shooter. Every shooter is different so the advantage may differ among shooters.
if you reload you can always vary the weight of your load or powder.

Worst "hurt" I can remember is that damn 1903 Springfield. Shot it 3 X & swore NEVER AGAIN. Sold it. What mean recoil. I still wice when I think of it Hoadie ------------- Loose wimmen tightened here |

My big realization came when I found out that a .300 Weatherby was indeed a real mans gun. 1 shot, direct to tears. I have a newly acquired 03A3 that has been converted to .308 Norma Mag that I have to shoot. it will be shot in a lead sled, as I won't risk a needless trip to the Chiropractor. I shot my #4Mk1 with 180 gr PPU ammo the other day off a rest and it wasn't too bad but I had the Limbsaver on it. I'm with Shamu on this one....Just finished "working" up an accurate 110gn load for a Remington 7600 Pump...and the best part was when I gave the "owner" his gun back.  Best thing about a "7600 Pump"...watching someone else use it !
