I have a Mk 4 that I would like the people in the know to identify the markings on it , originally built in 43 and FTr in 49 its the FMR with a T in it I would like to know more info on please and thank you. and the other 2 little stampies to the left , inspector marks ?   |

| Interesting rifle! It has actually been FTR'd twice. I'll get to that in a second. On the wrist, the M47 mark means it was originally built by BSA. Now, the mark you referred to as "FMR with a T in it" is actually a Maltby FTR mark. Those circular marks to the left are what I believe to be inspection marks. I have two Maltby receivers that both have those circular stamps. Your second FTR is indicated by the mark electro-penciled on. The (F) preceeding that FTR mark indicates that the second FTR was done at Fazakerley. It's fascinating because that rifle bears proof that it made the rounds of all 3 British manufacturers in its service life. |

It appears to be a No4Mk1/2 as a result of the Fazakerley FTR. Evident by the screw through the wood in front of the wrist. ------------- It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice! |

You may be right. I can't read the FTR numbers well enough to tell. The screw could also be "Bubba".  ------------- Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their planet!! |

| Thanks for the kind words, schnitz, but I actually only know a little. There are others around here that know far more than I do. The main reason I know so much about your case is that I have a thing for Maltby rifles. Also, check out that link to the Gunboards thread that Jon posted. There is an interesting theory on a rifle similar to yours. It's a good read. |

I take it back about the cross bolt screw head looking like a Bubba screw. For some reason the screw head just looked wrong. Now looking at my No. 4 Mk 1/2 fore stock it looks alright. I was wrong. ------------- Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their planet!! |

i agree as no4s go she has history and is still in original form , these days the bulk of what i see have been attacked by bubu or armature restorers that really did not care except to turn a buck off collectors just getting started , i think its a worthy one to keep in your collection , i respect what bear has said because he has been messin with these for quite a while - doing research and saving some of these im not seeing so well these days so i miss a lot in markings unless i get really good closeups and even first hand study with my loop , im beginning to experience the frustrations of my father in his later years , damn ........gettin old aint for sissys
