OLD FART PRIDE
Old Farts are easy to spot at sporting events; during the playing of the National Anthem, Old Farts remove their caps and stand at attention and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them.
Old Farts remember World War II, Pearl Harbour , Guadalcanal , Normandy and Hitler. They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, The Cold War, the Jet Age and the Moon Landing. They remember the 50 plus Peacekeeping Missions from 1945 to 2005, not to mention Vietnam .
If you bump into an Old Fart on the sidewalk he will apologize. If you pass an Old Fart on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old Farts trust strangers and are polite, particularly to women.
Old Farts hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection.
Old Farts get embarrassed if someone curses in front of children and they don't like any filth or dirty language on TV or in movies.
Old Farts have moral courage and personal integrity. They seldom brag unless it's about their children or grandchildren.
It's the Old Farts who know our great country is protected, not by politicians, but by the young men and women in the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard and police, serving their country.
This country needs Old Farts with their work ethic, sense of responsibility, pride in their country and decent values.
We need them now more than ever.

I was taught to respect my elders. It's just getting harder to find them.

I am glad I am a old fart and my kids are the improved model, silent but deadly.

Not a picture of me, but from the same intake at Air Force Gymnasium Jan 1988. Back then you either went and did your national service straight from high school or after university. We learned to be real men.

we once - in my lifetime had mandatory service - a draft [not what one might think of as volunteering for national service - by any means in those days of turmoil] today we are all voluntary , i agree with you in the premise ....one should , in the real world , "do your national service" ,

i agree it should be after high school or college as you may choose , but i also think it should be one of the things a person grows up from birth accepting as an obligation - no one is exempt - no one is privileged to be given special treatment ,

in my day - -- - i take a breath  - -- - our secretary of state john kerry "who served in viet nam" was treated special , as were others , but he went there -came back- and "told tales before congress" to launch his political career ,  there were many others that were drafted and others who volunteered to serve , they did not get to launch their careers by throwing their fellow servicemen under the bus before congress - john kerry's father was a congressman - it might have helped him get where he went , but his lies ...................that will not be forgotten by some of us , also did ,
there was also the hollywood crowd - but that is another rant ill tAKE UP ONE DAY IN THE FUTURE .

the gist of this is that , i do not take issue with national service , i think it a good thing , i think it should be mandatory , i also think that no person should be exempt nor should anyone ever get personal gain by serving , there should be penalty for both not serving and gaining politically ...im just saying , after near 50 years of looking back on what i looked at in those times ,

back when they could draft us - arm us - send us to kill in a foreign land - but we could not vote nor drink in our home town , we were young once ............

I think it was a great loss that national service was abolished. Every 16 year old male was given a mustering. We all complained about it, but after serving you were proud of having done it.
Back in the day you were also called up to do "camps". You had to go and do a few week's service every year or two. Although "campers" were seldom required to do anything. It was "accepted" that these older guys had done their required time and were there just as a mater of formality.

In today's professional militaries I believe that conscripts (national service / draft) should be allowed to opt out of doing service outside of the nation's boarders due to some controversial conflicts. Professional soldiers (i.e. those that have chosen soldiering as a profession) must accept their postings, domestic or abroad, as dictated by their government or find another profession.

Remembering that the word Infantry derives from the Latin word for boy. I guess the foot soldier was the first into battle. They would have been the youngest, fittest, and least proven of the soldiers. More experienced soldiers would have developed skills to handle heavier weapons and deploy more specific tactics.

I don't agree with interfering in another country's conflicts where there is no direct threat to that country. Except where the need for humanitarian reasons.

Good example is WWII. I won't list the bad examples on the grounds of offending people who served either not by choice or by misinformation.

After WWII there was the communist threat that was used to justify many a conflict. Added to that the falling apart of the communist states and the centuries old fight in the middle east.

I must say that the "Old Fart" attitude is sadly lacking in today's world; and it is a bad thing. I suspect that if we ever need to fight in Europe again, they will missed!

attitude may be lacking in some but ive had a resurgence of pride in the youth lately , ive been watching the rise in trap shooting in this state , went from about 30 five years ago to just over 2000 last year and this year we have over 8600 shooters , state shoot is later this week ,

last weekend we had a registered shoot , i only saw one youngster that did not show adequate respect when the national anthem was played and all were well behaved during the interaction with the older shooters , has rekindled my hope for the future and my positive views of the young ,

not all are looting and demonstrating in the streets - some are learning lifelong interests from those that found them before them ,

They were MEN with pride. Todays youth in the UK are a bunch of wimps and spoiled brats with no respect. Who think nothing of urinating on the war memorials. Bring back conscription but make it 3 years instead of 2 and a months refresher course every 2 years, the birch, hanging, and make prison a life of he!! for offenders not a holiday camp with tvs gyms and "prisoners rights". The nanny state and human rights brigade have ruined the UK.

Hear hear. I spent 7 years in England and all I wanted to do was beat the he!! out of the youths. And they know that you can't touch them because it would amount to assaulting a minor. I had 10 year olds telling me to f off.

I think it all starts with how a person is brought up. If you bring the right attitude you hardly have to discipline. Also making a youngster accountable for their actions goes a long way. Shooting and hunting are activities that bring these types of attitude and discipline.

Making youngsters do some kind of community service helps a lot to get them into the frame of mind that "its not all about me".

When we were in our 20's we went to South Wales, up in the Brecon Beacons a lot.

We got conned into doing "Outward Bound" & "Duke of Edinburgh's awards" by the local rugby club, which we were members of. They picked "Borstal Boys" (Juvenile offenders on the way to becoming jailbirds) for the courses to try & sort them out instead of rotting in the Scrubbs later on.

Its surprising how many "Yobbos" got sorted out on some of those camping trips. Many of them just didn't understand how to behave because they'd never been taught.

Anyone interested can Google earth for Penderyn (yes, where they had the arsenal that made .303 rounds its still there in an industrial park now.)

In the UK the problem seems to me that the lack of moral fibre has stemmed from the 70's "do good" society, don't punish the children, don't punish the poor unfortunate criminals, don't allow schools to correct wayward behaviour and catch it early. So slowly the whole population is getting polluted by unruly under educated people who only know how to shag and have more uneducated babies on benefit; it's viral ! When you get a few generations into it there's really not much hope.
I must say that in France it is not as bad as the UK yet; certain communities and areas have problems but it's not nationwide. But France only stopped National service in the 90's. so there is still a reasonably young generation with a reasonable education and ethic. But it is changing.

We still had corporal punishment when I finished school in the late 80's. Just talking to a teacher disrespectfully could result in 6 of the best. Smoking got you 3 days of 6. It was abolished in the 90's. Now we are having pupils stabbing, shooting and murdering each other, hard drugs and kids beating up teachers.

Sounds just like the UK. Benifits Britain with the attitude "why should I work the state can keep me?". I'm lucky both my kids work hard and have never been in trouble, they wouldn't dare. The lad is 24 and daughter is 21, I was and still am a single parent but never had to raise a hand to them in anger. Working with disabled and mentally handicapped people has been a great eye opener for me, the parents of a lot of the youngsters don't work when the kids are at the day centers because the state handouts for the kids keep them all in luxury. In effect the kids are "cash cows" for the parents and families, with free cars which are supposed to be used for transporting the kids but usually end up being the family transport and thats just the tip of the iceberg. The "old farts" must be spinning in their graves wondering why they made the ultimate sacrifice for a bunch of useless scum who have sod all respect for anyone. The politicians are a waste of space all they do is vote themselves pay increases, they've just had a £7k pay rise which equates to around 10% of their wages whilst we can't get a misreable 2% increase after 4 years of "austerity" with no pay rise.

When I see whats going on in Syria and Iraq, it concerns that the rest of the world doesn't really seem to be doing much. If they take Syria, then Turkey will be next and that's the back door into Europe! And who'll be there to stop them when there knocking on the door in 5 years time?

It's a worrying thought, I don't think most of todays youngsters have the grit to stand up and be counted and in "dads army" the ranks are thinning awful fast.

Its the classic pattern of asymmetric warfare. A tried & true Terrorist technique. It works like this.

Speaker for "The peoples Terr group"  uses 3 people, (lights, camera, action), to say:
"DURKA! DURKA! Death to Amerika"!
on a video which is mailed to the media. They smell "if it bleeds it leads" & run it unsubstantiated.

10,000 people PANIC!

Somewhere in country (U) a disgruntled butthead who happens to be a follower (But may no have any connection with them.) Posts a social media page claiming:
"DURKA! DURKA! Death to Amerika! I am a soldier of "The peoples Terr group"

The media runs this as well, but claims its part of an international terror cell.
100,000 people PANIC!

Then some doped up twat from A$$crakistan actually beats up his wife or something, claiming, you guessed it!
"DURKA! DURKA! Death to Amerika I am that soldier of "The peoples Terr group"
1,00,000 people PANIC!

Finally the one actual only 1/2 arsed terr of the lot of them manages to blow something up (usually with varying degrees of success).
1,000,000 people PANIC!

That's how less than 50 people total, many of whom don't know each other,  panic a million Americans.

I saw one of those little "Memes" (a billydoux with a picture) on Social Media the other day. It was a quote from some ISIS "spokesperson" claiming 173 "soldiers of Allah were in America ready to wage Jihad". The reply was classic:
"We have 100,000 pissed off Americans with guns just waiting on you, Your move, sparky!"
Confused

i agree shamu , its an exponentialy escalating panic caused by the media - we are witnessing it today here with regard to police brutality - its overblown and driven by the media stories , many of which can be debunked and prooved false as well as cleared in court , bottom line is DO NOT COMMIT THE CRIMES ..........

"....just a note(or observation, if you will)..Methinks that thanks to the liberal & lax immigration policies of the past 20 years...they're already here. They're just waiting for the right time.
Gonna be hard when the're already in our backyard..how ya gonna stop 'em then?

i agree - the reason for my posting concerns for my family , i was thinking HERE , although my daughter travels abroad regularly with our olympic team , i seldom worry of her as they have security , we dont have it here for her family - my grandkids ...........just sayin ,

Oh they're here, no doubt about it.
There's an enclave in a small town in upstate NY where the locals are afraid to walk on the streets because of the Hajiis acting out in town & you hear fully automatic fire from behind the walls regularly!
They are followers if not members as such. So far they've been pretty much ho hum in the attempts, things lime the shoe bomber & the guy with flaming underwear being prize examples.
Then someone gets lucky like the Boston Marathon group.
Fortunately they fail more than they succeed.
