First post...so...he!!o to everyone.

My 1st post will also be my 1st question. I'm wondering about how much "play" there is in the bolt on a No.1 when pulled fully to the rear. Headspace and lockup seems fine but the bolt seems a little "floppy" when pulled back. The "play" is up and down with the bolt, no side to side play. When fully forward, locked up and cocked, everything seems to be locked down good with no play what so ever. The locking lug on the bottom of the bolt does touch when it passes over the sear, then the cocking piece engages and cocks the rifle fine. What is normal and what would be dangerous for an Enfield?

Thanks, Tas

There is quite a bit of play if you have the bolt fully open. But there is no support on the bolt and the bolt head and one lug are all thats trying to stablize it at that point. i assume your free play is normal by your discription

Ohh and welcome to the site.

No, that is not normal. Is it dangerous? Not really unless it chips the sear beak from contact.
Should it be fixed?
Absolutely anything heading towards dangerous should be taken care of ASAP.

Possible causes:
Bent sear, gummed/gunked up sear pivot, weak or broken spring, Incorrect assembly (upside down).

Ohh i didnt read that corectly. the bottom/small lug should not contact the sear. i read it as the bottom lug passes over and the cocking piece catches the sear.
