im trying to find out a little bit more of my rifle here and on other sites and just not having much luck.

it seems like after looking at pictures of other no4s that mine just doesnt have all the stampings that others do.

on the receiver it has

303 British                             No4 MK1 (f)
United Kingdom                        10/48 PF49497
IAC alex VA

the SN on the bolt matches with a F48 on the underside of the handle and the back end piece (hammer?) has F47

there is a stamp on the top of the brass buttplate that matches a stamp on the front of the reciever that looks like a U with an arrow inside pointing down.

there is a very small stamp on the wrist band that looks like this
   L
N
E7

and another under the bolt handle
   X

G5

there are no markings on the barrel which has the full length stock.

there is still a bit of cosmoline on it that i need to clean off this week.

any help with the info provided would be great. i will try to get pictures up after i clean her up

it has the flip up micrometer sight

Your rifle is British made, by the Royal Ordnance Factory at Fazakerley, Liverpool in October 1948.  (That is the (F) 10/48 part.)   The PF number is the rifle's serial number.

First lot of markings are the calibre and the US importer's details.

The U with an arrow I think are South African service ownership marks

When it comes to these rifles there is certain nomenclature to them to be understood on parts. You did your best but the proper name for that part is the cocking piece. Stick around and we will teach you all part names you would ever want to know. Wink
