Driver was seen in local supermarket over the weekend. Extremely drunk (11am) and still driving the municipal truck.

I have contacted the local mayor of the municipality 3 times, but he refuses to reply.

I have heard that his mother is high up in the ANC and that he has been arrested numerous times for DUI. He has never been convicted and still has his job as a driver at the municipality.

I am going to the police station where I laid the charges to get a copy of the docket. I will be sending the major as registered letter and giving him a period to reply, after which I will turn the whole lot over to the press and the national minister of transport.

One day an innocent person/persons will be injured or killed by this dangerous drunk. And his mother will get it swept under the carpet. Corruption is South Africa's largest economic sector.

It does sound like there's someone in a high place that's got his back. Good luck.

Good luck on that, DairyFarmer. Hopefully something gets done to stop that guy before he does kill somebody.

Is there something akin to "Citizen's Arrest" there?

Yes, but its a minefield. In this case he was arrested by the police.

When you look closely at any justice system, it always seems to be a certain failure to do the right thing when the accused is either well connected or rich! It either gets dropped because some "yes" man wants to keep his job; or the expensive lawyers wrap the system up with never ending appeals so it's never gets to trial.

Publicity may well be the key, especially as you have that video footage, which would look pretty compelling on the telly.

agreed - but dont make yourself a target trying to do the right thing without some kind of backup - a lawyer might not be a bad choice in this instance ,

I can see that. If there is someone high up keeping this guy driving a Municipal truck then the blowback from turning things over to the media could be..... interesting.... to say the least.
