Not sure if this is the appropriate forum for this question, but I'm looking at a No4 mk1/2 and the barrel band has a drop of yellow paint on it about the size of a pencil eraser just to the left side of the sight (on the band, not actually on the sight). I've had blued guns before that people put nail polish on a front sight post for visibility, but never on a painted finish. I'd like to remove it somehow but I'm wary of damaging the finish underneath.

good point - there is a reason the paint is there - some used in cadet training were so marked to denote certain deficiencies and useability ,

No idea why it's there. Already bought it so I guess now I get to figure out what it's on the rifle for. Here is a picture of the paint.

Hopefully it was just some splatter from other rifles being marked or something. It's a really small spot and I don't see any more on the rifle

Nothing out of the ordinary serial numbers and model stampings

It might be something as simple as an individual (Not in the service, it wouldn't be allowed) making a mark so he could easily & quickly pick his own rifle out from a rack of other competitors guns at a shoot.

could be Sham...but why yellow? We've seen the DP'd rifles marked in yellow.
Why not a different colour?
We don't know what condition the barrel is in, at this point..& we haven't seen the stamps on the rifle.(Or have we? Maybe I missed a posting?)

I don't think you missed anything, there was just a gap in the postings for a while there.
Maybe it was bright & he had some?
Clap
The cadet rifles were usually painted in a band round the forend, this looks like just a dab to me?

The Enfield from Down Under used the following paint code,

Green, good to go.

Yellow, not as good as green, ok for an occasional use.

Red, drill only, not safe to shoot.
