As the subject says I just traded for the gun and I've been reading up but I want to know more about it. I was told it's a no4 mk1 I'm happy with the gun (came with about 300 rounds some ap some tracers and many normal rounds) I just want to know if it is what I was told it is the numbers dont seem to match

Well it is not a No 5 barrel, judging by the outside shape of the chamber.

May well be a "chopped No4 conversion to No5 ish carbine", Can we get more pics. From just that one image it could also be sporterised not "No5 erised".

shamus example is what im guessing you have , its nice the seller told you rather than try to scam you as if it were a no5 , it is not - no lightening cuts on that photo , but as shamu shows these can be beautiful rifles in their own right ,

show us more we can tell you more ,

are my pictures showing up should be 5? If so what else should I get pictures of for more info?

Much better we can see them all now, thanks.
You will find the forend is probably longer than "correct" that's because the inside has cuts for lightening with crosspiece webs & they cut only at the web.
Look at the sling swivel band for the difference below.
You have a decent ersatz carbine there. Check for zero though because the cut down barrel & added flash suppressor may have changed it quite a bit.

The serial number shows it was built at Maltby, so that gives your answer. It was a No 4 Mk 1 that has been cut down to look like a No 5. Could you post a picture of the markings on the left front of the receiver? There will be circular inspection stamps in that area.

bears43 the only marking on the left side of the receiver says number 5 but you can easily see that they remove whatever markings were there to put that on it. As far as I can tell it shoots pretty accurately but I've only shot out to 70 feet as that is as far out as our local range goes. And that was with the one set screw on the flash hider being loose and wobbling a little but I've tightened it down and I'll know more next time I take it shooting

Nice rifle.  I had one many (25) years ago, and sold it.  If you haven’t fired it yet, be prepared for discharge loudness with a capitol L, and recoil with a capitol R!

IMHO, old milsurp ammo is both likely corrosive as well as inaccurite.  I have about 400 rounds of 1940-50s production...  won’t shoot it, for those reasons above.  It just sits there in it’s own ammo can.

I’d invest in a new box of 174 grain PPU or S&B to take out for the first time firing it.

I didnt really think the recoil was that bad I have a Remington 870 and the recoil is about the same as birdshot

"Set Screw"! Uh Oh. They are supposed to be held on by interference fit & 2 cross pins! Set screws will not hold under repeated use & will scar up the barrel when they let go.

Ummm..  just re-read your posts above.

My No 4 sporter doesn’t have the recoil that I remember my No 5 had.

The first few shots out from that gun, well, Maybe it was that I was not expecting the recoil.  It was the first enfield I ever had, maybe 30 years ago...  a true No 5.  Really surprized me at the time...

When I was a the range with that No 5, i guess the recoil wasn’t so terrible after all.  Pretty interesting rifle, really.

Glad you are enjoying your new rifle!

all right I've gone over every little bit of the gun I can and I found every little marking I could it looks like on the left side of the receiver there were three stamps 1  is completely faded other than the minutest part of a circle the middle one   looks like it says 14 the top one there looks like there's a six but it's faded all the pictures are in the link I'm going to share hope this helps with your tracking of these guns for your book bear

It is a Maltby made Enfield. The England stamp is a pre 1968 sold out of service stamp. The magazine is not the original to the rifle,no big deal there. The bolt is not the original as well. The small issue with that the bolts are matched to the master component, (the receiver). Is there a Golden State Arms Santa Fe Division Jungle Carbine Special  stamped on the barrel?

I'm sorry but I'm confused.

At first you said:

“And that was with the one set screw on the flash hider being loose and wobbling a little but I've tightened it down and I'll know more next time I take it shooting “

but now you say:

“2 cross pins but no interference fit also no lightening cuts “

Can you explain, please?

& this image seems to show a set screw & 2 bolts?

yes it is a Golden State Armory Santa Fe jungle carbine people keep talking about there being lightning cuts in the barrel or something and I just was stating that it didn't have any of those. the flash hider is non interference fit and the two cross screws allow it to wobble back and forth a little bit I didn't see the set screw at first and then once I tightened it down  the flash hider no longer moves

so when I get a chance to take this gun out to shoot at 100 yards if the sights are way off is the anything I can do to get closer to point of aim?

Posted By: Goosic
Date Posted: December 31 2018 at 9:45am
I will be very blunt here. Do not expect it to do well out to 100 yards right out of the gate. Start at 25 yards, see where it hits and then move out to 50 yards, see where it hits. Keep adjusting your aim until you reach the 100 yard mark. Once you've found your rifles true point of aim,you can fine tune it afterwards. The front sight appears to be that of an original  No4/5 sight. You can find them on ePay in various heights.  That cut down barrel of yours in conjunction with the flash hider will make your rifle buck a tad causing the shot to hit high. Measure twice, cut once...

^^^
THIS.
set the rear sight to 4 clicks below "2", that's close to 100 yds with MkVII ball ammo.
(Now set up zero at 25 yds which is similar)

Front sight VERTICAL is fixed by changing the front sight blade. The come in several heights & you current height is stamped on the base of the blade as a +/- number (like "060", or -030"). See how far off it is (ignoring left<> Right).
Change the blade (we can help you with which one you want, or there are formulae out there for original barrels)
When fitting it make a "witness mark" & center the blade in the dovetail. Then you drift it left<> right to correct.
Then you take a center punch & punch the join between the blade & the base to "fix it" (for that ammo.)
With the shortened barrel & the flash hider attached you're going tom have to "wing it a bit", but you'll get there.

just an update from a range day seeming like this gun is more on point  of aim than I'm able to shoot it unfortunately I still haven't had a chance to take it out any further than 70 feet but it's putting the bullets pretty well right were I want them my groups aren't great but I think that has to do more with me as a shooter than the gun they're still within a 6in x 6in square

The six inch group you have. Are the shots appearing to be all horizontal, or vertical,or just everywhere within the six inch square? Alot of times with a cutdown barrel and a sporterized stock, the shots can spread out horizontally, sometimes vertically. At just under 25 yards, if the shots are running horizontally, at 100 yards that spread will cover the whole of a  18" square...

most of them we're a little low & probably 4 inch wide but I was including everything I shot I'm also shooting reloaded ammo that came with the gun so I really don't know much about other than it shoots I'm just going through some of the brass so I can start reloading myself using some stuff I know is quality also it's not just the Enfield I shot my m&p AR-15 groups and my Hi-Point 10 mm carbine groups are about the same I've only been shooting rifles for about 5-6 months now and none of these were from a bench either this was standing with no support

Lots of unknowns in there, it seems the previous owner may have matched his sights to his load.
That may mean if you come up with a different one you may need to re zero as well.

according to the last owner he bought the reloads from somebody else I haven't had any issues with thim going bang but like you said there's too many unknowns that's why I'm trying to empty some so I can load them myself I'm also planning on buying Factory loads and seeing which I like better
