I bought my very first Enfield out of a cardboard barrel in 1978 for $9.95, no tax.

I got a text from a friend of mine last night.

He hunts - his kids & Grandkids hunt. His father hunted.
Bill has his father's (sported) Lee Enfield. Won't part with it for the world.

He's looking to get his Grandkids Lee Enfields, as well. (They are all well arsenaled, they get new shooting irons dang near every year).

Anyway - Bill is suddenly noticing that Lee Enfields are becoming expensive..he wanted to know why

I believe they are getting more expensive due to owners keeping them so less are on the market. Supply and demand.

There is a metal working shop in a small town south of us. 25 or so years ago when long gun registration came in, there was a period of time when people could turn in unwanted firearms to the police, no questions asked. I've recently talked to a guy that worked there. He said hundreds of Lee Enfields were turned in to the cops by local farmers. All were chopped up. He did say lots of magazines and bolts were removed and saved. Not sure if it's true and I'm looking into it.

Although it sounds like an urban legend!! I guess my point is how many Lee Enfields were destroyed during this time because of people inheriting these rifles and not being hunters, collectors, etc? What a shame. Or couldn't be bothered to register them? We now don't have to register non prohibited long guns, but too late to save these iconic rifles.

As I re-call, there was a lot of fear & confusion over the long gun registry(Bill-C 68).
A lot of people - especially the older ones didn't want to "get into trouble", many feared having to take a safety/competence course.
There were tube-kits sold for people to bury their firearms or seal them into walls. (a lot of those were forgotten about).
Then there was mis-interpretations made.IE: modifying the L/E magazine to hold only 5 rnds, or "to avoid the expensive registration fees, render them to NON FIRING.
All in all, it was(is) a complete clusterf&@k.
& you can see it coming..all the politicians are garnering brownie points by dumping on firearms & their owners. Very shortly they'll be coming after them..you watch

You are correct, Hoadie. The government used fear tactics. You could be a law abiding citizen one day, a criminal the next. I just read on the CBC that a bunch of govt. Pencil necks are having a conference on gang gun violence. They say while violence with firearms among law abiding citizens is down, gun violence with gangs, due to the drug trade, is up. What caught my eye in the article is they stated " gangs are now using legal guns stolen from citizens." That comment raised a big red flag for me!

When a gun is stolen it becomes an illegal weapon; so the gangs are still using illegal firearms! They are just trying to blame it on the law abiding gun owners.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

Yep its a question of twisting life to fit their little fantasy world.
"If innocent, law abiding, civilians didn't have guns criminals wouldn't be able to steal them"!
There's a video going the rounds with a cheetah & an antelope, they're saying:
"If we de-horn the antelope the cheetah will stop hunting"!
 TILT!
Don't shoot till you see the whites of their thighs. (Unofficial motto of the Royal Air Force)

Actually, no. If I'm a cheeta, I'm saying, "cool! A victim with no risk to me!"
