I bought one of these after market mags as my two original ones are a bit on the rough side cosmetically. It fits in the rifle snugly. It has rather sharp edges and this might be an issue if carrying for hunting. The real problem is the spring tension. Loading even 5 rounds was a real effort. Unloading them was an even worse experience. I will keep it and try to reduce the spring tension if it doesn't lighten up with use.

The No4 Mk1 Sporter I traded for (Ruger .300 Mag single shot) had an after market magazine. I've been tweaking it for a bit. I think I'm good, but If I can't get to the point I feel comfortable taking it into the field, I do have 2 more No4 Mk1's (and a #5) that fit nicely.

Over the years that these after market magazines have been offered to the public, I have been reading and hearing more negatives than positives about the functioning. If I were you....I would probably still use it in the field but carry an original with you for that 'just in case' scenario.

Yes Pro-Mag has a terrible reputation.

I cant speak for the Enfield Rifle Pro mags , but I had purchased several .22 cal pro mags for a GSG 5 Clone of an MP-5 chambered in .22 cal. .... they worked fine for about 300 rounds , then the rifle started jamming, I switched back to the original GSG mags and the rifle shot great !! We put another 500+ rounds through the original Mags with no problems ... now Im stuck with a few Pro Mags .... seems the spring is not that great and wears out , another Pro Mag I have got to try was for a 50 AE Desert Eagle ! The Pro mag was bought by the customer to see why the pistol jammed after each shot, with Pro Mags it still jammed !! But on further testing with both Original Mags and after market mags , I found that the recoil of the pistol was the main culprit !!! it recoiled so hard that if you did not hold the pistol tight and take all the recoil the round would not chamber !!! I stiffened up and got the mag to empty with out jamming, but then that made the pistol useless for defense and only good for target shooting ...

For what its worth:
I have exactly ONE Pro-Mag - its for my P.38 pistol. It is the very BEST looking mag I have for that gun because it appears that it is an extrusion rather than a fold-and-weld. In any event, like the OP notes, the spring was as strong as Heracles, so I replaced it with a Wolff mag spring I had on hand before I ever even tried using it. No problems with it whatsoever. Probably wouldn't have been so smooth sailing with the original spring. |
