I’ve got a Savage No4 mk1* that has the basic rear flip sight. Is there any advavantage to replacing it with the adjustable flip sight?

Yes, absolutely.  The best one to get is the Mk 1 version, the machined micrometer sight with one minute click elevation adjustments.

The Mk 2 “L” type flip sight is set for 300 yds (with bayonet fixed) and 600 yds without bayonet.  The Mk 1 rear sight will allow you to obtain a 100 yard zero and better shooting with the smaller diameter aperture.

Thanks… that’s exactly the info I needed. Still learning about these Enfields after 45 years of Mausers!

Is this the proper sight? And can I reuse my existing pin and plunger assembly with this sight?

Not quite!
The sight in the illustration is for the shorter barreled No.5 rifle; the sight you require is marked up to 1300 yards but looks almost identical.

The machined rear sight for the No. 5 rifle can be used on the No. 4.  The clicks will give a finer elevation adjustment, approx 1/2 MOA.    I have one of these reproduction sights fitted to one of my No. 4 rifles.

Yes, but the markings won't.
That's not as bad as it sounds because they are only accurate for the original 174Gr MkVII FMJ anyway!

Correct.  By “markings”, Shamu is referring to the range index marks on the rear sight leaf. The numbers correspond to yards and there are index lines every 50 yards.

Unless you intend to only shoot Mk 7 or 7z service ammunition, these markings won’t align to actual range to the target (I.e your ammo is not likely going to follow the exact trajectory set up by the rear sight). Regardless of what sight you get, you will most likely have to get a different height front sight blade to zero your rifle to the range index mark on the rear sight (typically done at 200 yards).   You can handload a 174 grain bullet to get the trajectory close to Mk 7 ball ammo, at least out to 600 yds.
