I just refinished my #4 Mk1 (F) . The metal had the typical black paint finish that had chipped really bad. Normally I would have refinished with Dupli-color, satin black, 1200 degree w/ Ceramic (exact same finish of the Brit black weapons paint) that I've used on my L1A1's. This time I tried "flat black, Moly-Resin".
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I kind of like the looks of it!

Here's the before picture, as close as I can come to a before pic.
![]() ![]() ![]() Like I told Shamu on the phone, my camera lens (Canon A530) fogged over when I tried to get before pictures. Humidity and heat have been terrible of late.
I did get the obligatory foot in one of the above pictures.

Do you like the flat black better than the satin black?
Did you paint the entire bolt too? What was your prep process? I've got a couple of Ishapore's to refinish. Great job on the stock too! MJ

Yes! I did the entire bolt, I hadn't intended to but I got carried away. I didn't coat the bolt head though. I remove the #1 head before I went after the bolt.
![]() I started by stripping off the wood, removing metal bands and the front sight hood, magazine and bolt I used a sandblaster with #4 sand to get the left over paint chips off and to rough the surface for the Moly-Resin. I've used the sand for so long it's more like powder. It's such a light sanding that the engraved lettering isn't even disturbed. I blasted and coated the bands.
Then I used my toaster oven to bake everything for 1.5 hours @ 400 degrees. That sets the moly-Resin to a durable finish. The receiver was totally disassembled. Sight came off, the safety came off, the trigger mechanism came off. Even the tiny band for the back of the forarm wood came off. I didn't blast the inside of the receiver except where the bolt traveled. I made sure to coat the sight evenly and coat the internal areas I blasted on the receiver. I did NOT blast and coat the entire barrel (it wouldn't fit my toaster oven). I did blast off the front sight and end of the barrel. All the sling loops and screws.
On the stock I had to replace the bottom forarm as it was cracked and broken. The rest of the stock was cleaned with stripper. I used stripper on it for 3 days in a row applying 3 of 4 coats a day and allowing them to set 30 minutes each. Washed off everything with hot water, allowed it to dry and then steamed it with an Iron and soaking wet towel to remove all the dings and dents. It's a long drawn out process.
I did the wood about 2 years ago. The metal wasn't done until July of this year.
I have to admit, I love this rifle! It's the only Military bolt action rifle that doesn't kick the dog snot out of me. I can see why the brits kept this in their inventory for 50 some odd years.

PS:
I had thought about refinishing the metal with Dupli-color, 1200 degree, Ceramic Paint in a satin finish. I've found it to be an exact duplicate of the british firearms paint. I didn't have enouugh Dupli-Color left to cover the entire rifle.
I've done 2 or 3 FAL's (L1A1's) with Dupli-color and the rifles and mags are still like new. Even makes for good touchups.

Gorgeous rifle Aif and thanks for the info. When using Dupli-Color, do you need to bake it or can you just liet it cure?

She shoots like a dream, ask Shamu about that, he's put rounds down range with her also. Very accurate.
When using Dupli-color 1200 degree satin black paint it's best to bake it (@ 400 degrees for 1.5 hours) But don't use your other halfs oven. It WILL

Thanks for the tip.
I'll use my brother-in-laws oven.
I've got another month of extreme busyness, then I hope to get to work on my Ishapores.

It does shoot well, believe him!
Coloring the bolt is correct as well. The Silver bolts are just from wear as the bolt & head, but not the face, were painted when new. Assuming you can see the actual bolt under the cosmo. ![]() |
