Hi Guys
I have a quick question from a new guy. I have a chance to pick up a
Original configuration 1916 BSA
SHT.LE III*. My question is will this rifle shoot modern store bought ammo if it doesn't have the HV SC on the barrel??? Or do I need to keep with the earlier round nose bullets?? Thanks

At one time I owned a 1916 III(no star) and I shot modern ammo out of it with no issues. 150gr Sp`s, 180grn RNSP`s, 215gr lead RN and 174gr FMJ`s (MkVII equiv`t.) All hand loads and some commercial.
As long as its in good knick, have at `er.

I have two 1916's. I use the P/H sporter for hunting as my "GO TO". (She's never let me down). I use commercial ammo. 150 gr on deer, 180 on moose, & 174 gr for target w/fmj.
I've now retired my "VIMY VET"..but shot the same with it til retirement.

So, have at 'er!

Thanks guys for the info. Good to know. The rifle is in great shape for its age but looks to have had some time in the trenches by the dings and gouges on the stock. I plan to have it checked out by my
Gunsmith before I fire it up!
Thanks again for your help.

The .303 Ball Mk VII cartridge with 174 grain spitzer flat based bullet was introduced in 1910, and was the cartridge fired in the millions in WWI and II. If your rifle was made in 1916, it was made to fire the Mk VII cartridge.

Any commercial .303 British ammunition should be suitable.
