It is a lighter color than the original photo, lighting may play a factor. The rifle, as I received, also had a tactile gummy feeling to it that had many layers of dirt and grime. Sat in a dirty garage for 15 years, who knows before that. A simple wipe with a cloth and linseed oil pulled a good amount of grime off it. Feels a lot cleaner, but is a little lighter than I would prefer.

The rear hand guard was always a little lighter and didn't seem to match the rest, but it did really lighten up a lot...which I didn't expect.

Any worth in adding in some darker finish? Any recommendation for a good product or color?

I wouldn't obsess over it.
They weren't color matched originally anyway.
Fresh linseed is almost clear, but as it oxidizes it darkens.
If you have somewhere safe, but near a window let it sit there for  a while. Sunlight speeds up the darkening process.
You could use a little oil-based walnut stain if you wanted to though. Are there any walnut trees near you?  If so you can make your own very easily. Collect a few fallen walnuts & cut them up roughly. now sit them in some linseed & let the color leach out into the liquid (week to 10 days) then remove & run through a coffee filter &  use normally.

AVOID things like the MinWax finishes, that dries like varnish.

The finish will be lighter, he cleaned it!

Not to worry. Keep going with the raw linseed oil regime and it will start to darken in a few weeks.

My 'go to' for matching wood is walnut Feibing's oil based leather dye.

Interesting tid bit there Shamu. I just so happen to have some walnuts given to me the other day.
Is it the nut in the she!! or the covering that is used?
I got these to plant to try and grow materials for musket stocks (it'll take a while)

That leather dye comes highly recommended, but I've not tried it myself.
The green pithy outer section. Just carve it up any way you can so the liquid can get to the guts of the thing.
You can also make water-based stain the same way by using walnuts & water instead of oil. Put a little alcohol in the water though to prevent it getting funky.

Good looking rifle! Did you do anything to clean up/recolor the receiver and bolt? Not sure I'll go that route but would be good info to have.

Appreciate the warning to avoid some products. I don't plan on doing much to this rifle, since I've never restored a firearm before and don't want to mess this one up.

the hole you found was an intentional one at manufacture - it is a relief hole for gasses when the case separates to keep it from your face , it was meant to be there , the other i refereed to was a much bigger one - often located below the wood line to conceal the deactivation for a display , but a very real concern , glad you doint have that ,

you approached this exactly as i would and much as yu should have - the buttstock can be removed with the forearm removed if you like but not necessary it seems ,

Yes, Fiebings dark brown works fine for me for stocks.
It can be flushed off for a lighter colour, or more coats for deeper colour, it works fine for everything it seems!

Nope all I did was wipe it down with a oily piece of old, lint free t-shirt. I used 3 in one ":electric motor oil." Its thicker than "gun oil" so it stays in place longer & better as a protectant.
The stock wood was drastically saturated with oil when I got it, if you left it in the sun for even a few minutes it leeched out of the wood & dripped off it was so wet!

I’m chompin at the bit to put a few rounds through it. Waiting on a spring that was missing in the rear loop and a screw that was missing from the front nose piece. Then I’ll reassemble and fire. It’s hard to wait!

well now there is a display of nature that those climate folks would play he!! controlling with our tax money ............BTW have they ever controlled nature to date ? NO I THOUGHT NOT ...Just sayin ,

i like a nice deep brown finish , i tend toward a tint of red when i can but its not required to please me , finish is oiled - never glossy or slick , hand rubbed in a traditional manner , boned if you like a bit of sheen , there is no bling on these save a parade version that are not what most of us seek out ,

Well guys, here it is. Thanks to the help/advice you guys provided,s this 1918 SMLE no1 Mk III* (all matching numbers) is cleaned and in good working order! I can't believe someone was going to throw this away. Got it all put back together and fired it for the first time today (first time being fired in at least 15 years). Here are some updated photos. Bore cleaned up nice after some CLP and a box of bullets.

The next thing to work on is the safety. After each shot the safety bounced back into safe mode which kept me from cycling the round.
