Saw a whole herd, 6 does & a buck, working the edge of the treeline at about 65yds.
They had no idea I was there.
Unfortunately I was aware of the big school building directly behind them so I just watched them for a bit till they wandered off.
*sigh*

I didn't get a damn thing! When I arrived(fri) it was colder than a witch's tit. There was a good covering of snow on the ground, too! I figgered it was gonna be a great hunt..woke up Sat mornin..all that had changed!I was standin on the deck-in the sun-shirtless,drinkin my mornin coffee!!For the next 6 days & nights, there wasnt a cloud in the sky-& not even a HINT of a breath of a breeze!! Cant say as I've ever seen that before.Seen a fair bit o sign but no deer.Saw ALOT of moose & Elk sign-no deer tho dragged my Enfield up & down-hither & thither-to no avail.Saw 2 in the entire week(I pushed em out-nobody saw them Woulda bin better carrying Suntan lotion than the Enfield!! Damn weather!!

Admittedly I use my 243.
But the winters coming,

And the snow will cover tracks,

And I'll be watching,

Because I'm hunting you

How about a 170 lb hog (boar) at around 50 yards with the #4..?
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

Just ask lost roo how good a shot I am.

Here in Australia the most common deer we hunt is Fallow, which isn't a very large animal. Only about a metre high at the shoulder and weighing around 80 kilos tops, so slightly smaller then a whitetail.  A 243 with sensible bullets like the 85grn sierra pro hunter or 95grn hornady SST smashes them with a decent shoulder or lung shot.

Actually last hunting trip we bombed a bachelor mob of red deer, big bastards. We took out three of the things and they weighed at least 170 kilos, probably 200. It took four of us to throw the carcass on the front of the ute, and in the tray as well. Two were shot with a 270, the first was shot with a 243.

I use my 243 for pigs and goats as well. The tikka T3 is such a brilliant rifle, nice and light, shoots straight and I love the detachable mags for when you bomb up a mob of goats. Thing is it looks like I may be going on a goat cull soon and I am seriously considering taking my 9.3x62, as well as my 303 for some proper carnage.
But the winters coming,

And the snow will cover tracks,

And I'll be watching,

Because I'm hunting you

I used a 150gn Game King, I'm pretty sure it was from my batch 45.5gn of IMR 4064.  Same bullet I used to neck shot the grouse I posted up.

Hatch Fallow Deer are very similar in stature to coastal Blacktail's and as a matter of fact we have fallow deer on 2 of the islands off of Vancouver Island.  an 80kilo BT is a monster
